Completed in 2003, this Michigan home draws from both Eliel Saarinen and the English Arts and Crafts movement. Nearly every decorative detail was crafted by hand, bringing layers of material and workmanship to the brick, slate, and wood exterior.

With the holidays coming up, we’re thinking about rooms like this one in our California Ski Lodge. The house was conceived for a young family with plenty of room for extended family and friends to join them, including two bunk rooms and a separate guest wing.

It’s easy to picture the cousins piling into these bunks after a day on the mountain, or a house full of friends settling in for a long weekend. And with skiing nearby, there’s no shortage of reasons to get everyone together once the snow starts falling.

Built for a family with four young children, this Hamptons residence was designed with everyday family life and entertaining in mind. The kitchen opens directly into a circular breakfast room, one of several curved spaces introduced to soften the angular geometry of the home’s architecture. Warm wood cabinetry and richly veined stone carry through the kitchen, reflecting the natural material palette found throughout the house.

Cozy fall evenings in Tahoe look a little something like this. The firepit sits just outside a covered porch and outdoor kitchen, making this an easy spot for cool nights by the fire, preferably with s’mores involved.

In this exceptional Hamptons residence, selecting a work of art for the sweeping curved staircase presented a particular challenge: finding a piece that would complement and respect the remarkable architecture of @tomkligerman.
Working closely with the talented interior designer Nikki Rosenthal @_studiorosenthal and the collectors, I proposed a rare installation by the celebrated Korean artist Lee Bae.
LEE BAE (b. 1956)
Untitled, 1999
Charcoal, 30 elements
The work was featured in LEE BAE: UNION, curated by Cheryl Sim at the PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art, Montréal, February 24 – June 20, 2021.
A dialogue between art, architecture and interior design, where the work becomes an integral part of the space without compromising its architectural integrity.
Delighted to see this remarkable home featured in @vogueliving.

@tomkligerman discusses his new book, “Summer by the Sea: Cottages from Watch Hill to Little Compton,” in @traditionalbuildingmagazine.

“...it really became a thank-you letter to the state of Rhode Island, which I’ve been visiting since I was 10 years old. I decided to expand beyond architecture. It’s a story told through 16 houses, but I wanted to tell the story of Rhode Island, its history, its geology, shipwrecks, lighthouses. I wanted to tell a more complete story, and these houses became the vehicle for me to do that. It’s an ode to the state. It’s an ode to the coast.” –Tom Kligerman

Grand in scale, contemporary in spirit. For this newly built Hamptons home, @kligermanad looked to the great houses that once dotted the eastern end of Long Island, bringing classical proportions to a distinctly modern family residence.

“Modern and classically proportioned, the scale recalls grand houses at the turn of the last century,” @TomKligerman tells @vogueliving. An axial arrangement of rooms and a soaring 10-foot front door lend a sense of grandeur, while the architecture remains unmistakably of the present.

Built on a pentagonal plan with stone towers marking each corner, this Northern California home is anchored by a steep roof of diamond-laid patinated copper. The pitch was designed to handle heavy Sierra snow loads, while the copper provides added fire resistance.

Last week at #DesigningGreenwich, Chris LaGuardia joined Kathryn Herman of @kathrynhermandesign and @deborah_nevins of Deborah Nevins & Associates for “Grounded in Beauty: The Art of Landscape Design,” moderated by @mrclintsmith.

It was a great two days of conversations, with inspiring panels and speakers from across the design industry. Thank you to @cottagesgardens & @nivenbreen for bringing together such a thoughtful group and for including LDG in the conversation.
