The Lamp in the Window by Tom Mead

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin...

Each Christmas Eve, academic and antiquarian Roland Spence invites a select group of students to his quarters to indulge in a glass or two of port, and to listen to a ghostly tale by the fireside. It seems like an innocent enough tradition—after all, who doesn’t enjoy a wintry chill at Christmastime?

Decades later, one of Spence’s students must revisit those half-remembered stories as a long-buried secret threatens to resurface...

Thank you so much @tommeadauthor and @pspublishinguk for my copy. This sounds incredible and I can't wait to read it.

How amazing is this edition? Swipe to see the naked cover, endpapers and signature page. I love it so much 😍😍

The Lamp In The Window is out now.

Oddly, crime writers are the most delightful people you could ever wish to meet.
You’d think they’d be dark, brooding & menacing, right?
Nope. They’re a warm, welcoming & the very best company. I can only surmise that the darkness is all dealt with on the page. That’s certainly my excuse 😉

Thanks so much for organising last night’s get together @m_j_arlidge @heather.critchlow @john_sutherland_author @gdwrightwrites @domnolanauthor ❤️

Tom Mead has conjured the Golden Age of Crime with this first novel featuring puzzle-solving magician, Joseph Spector. In "Death and the Conjuror", Tom Mead aims to pay homage to John Dickson Carr and Jonathan Creek, but he succeeds in doing a whole lot more than that, because this novel is just as clever and entertaining, earning its spot on the very same podium... Full review on my blog.

Author of the Joseph Spector series of mysteries, @tommeadauthor discusses how Golden Age crime influenced his 1930s London-set ‘locked room’ mysteries, reveals the real life (and fictional) figures that inspired magician-turned-detective Spector, and tells us who his favourite mystery writer is.

A click, then a slap. That is the sound Tom Mead lodges in your head and refuses to remove.

The Lamp in the Window is a Victorian ghost story done properly. An old don named Roland Spence lights a lamp on his windowsill every Christmas Eve, gathers his students by the fire, and tells them a tale. Years later, one of those students has to face what the stories were really about.

No gore. No cheap scares. Just cold, patient dread that rolls in like weather and a guilt that will not stay buried. Mead brings the discipline of his locked-room mysteries to the ghost story, and it pays off on every page.

Light the fire. Pour the sherry. Just don't expect to sleep.

Only 200 signed copies from Absinthe Books. Full review at the link in bio.
