//COMMUNITY + CLAY//

When I moved to Canada at 18, I didn't have words for what I was missing. I know now that
it was community: a sense of place, of being part of something larger than myself. So much of my practice since has been a search for that.

While at Medalta, working alongside other makers, I was reminded that making is rarely a solitary act. It happens in the shared studio, in the conversations, in the generosity of people who offer their time, their knowledge, and their curiosity without being asked. Being in community encourages us to explore new interests, to be mentored and to mentor, and to see our own
work through someone else's eyes.

One of the moments that stayed with me most was firing with a group of people. There is a
particular kind of trust in it. You prepare your work, hand it over to the heat, and wait
together, knowing that no one can control the outcome. Everyone has something at stake,
and everyone is a little vulnerable. We tended the kiln, shared the anticipation, and opened
it together.

In a world where so much of our connection happens digitally, I'm grateful for spaces that
bring us back to our hands, to one another, and to the places where we live and work. Medalta changed how I think about my practice, and how I understand belonging.

Being among such an incredibly strong group of women was inspiring. Thank you to everyone who made this experience what it was. Months later, and for the rest of my life, I'll carry that with me 🤍

Today the @medaltaartists residents made mugs for #calgaryto support women immigrating to Calgary. I It was fun to make some things and work to an all Canadian music playlist requested by @steven_pennett who’s from #Kentucky via #newjersey

ad to put up a better self portrait of myself and my hat in my @medaltaartists studio space I was gifted this cowboy hat from my lovely table mate, amazing artist and cowgirl 🤠 @laurie.i.steinbach from last years stampede. The hat was from her husband who used to compete in the stampedes years ago. Laurie told us all the things we wanted to know about rodeoing and we had a really fun time.

This was truly the highlight of my summer after grinding away the MFA summer term lol

Some of the nicest and deeply weird and talented people I’ve met. Weird being a compliment in my book. @medalta

So today was my first day of a year long residency @medaltaartists @medalta in #medicinehat #alberta where I was singled out to volunteer by @tomospots lol (Tomo is really gonna hate I said this haha) for to start of the artist takeover.

It’s been three months since I’ve touched clay; since finishing the MFA at @albertauarts ; glad to be back here where I got to work with @magiclanterns #sharryboyle workshop last summer. medalta is sort of a magical place. Wild life everywhere, so much sun and really amazing arts community to boot.

I thought I’d post a work I did back a while ago where I was working with a #collage like composition using digital painting, oil painting, photography and ceramics sculpture in a piece.

For myself I usually start working on sketches, and the art works either become part of the process or lead me to think through ideas of other works. My work sometimes crosses many different mediums trying to get at ideas out in different way, theories, or just making sense of things through the act of creating.

This particular piece is a pastiche of working between these mediums in a surrealistic way, to think about space, colour, #sculpture and what happens when they combine to to create a new place that couldn’t have existed outside of the confines on the end medium. I love looking at and analyzing what is valued and what is un-valued in art which intimately relate to my body, the disabled body in society, while contemplating what those things mean to me and others and how they are expressed in our realities. This tension between mediums, thoughts and reflexive thinking is the point I look for in any work.

@pavedarts darkroom with @thereimereason giving me a brush-up on old-school printing techniques and dealing with tricky #film #negatives.

This photoshoot re-creating "The Gross Clinic" by Thomas Eakins (1875) with my fellow cohort of @medalta @medaltaartists at the urging of @amy_susieee was a total riot. But very low-light. I think we aced the Chiaroscuro. More to come.

Wow, and just like that I am finished another month long residency at @medaltaartists. What a trip, what happened, where did it go?

I’ve learned a ton, been playing with plaster and pots, and making messes as usual. I’ll be back again in June and August for workshops, in July for a residency, and in the meantime I’m working on paintings and pots to take to a woodfiring workshop in BC!

Woof, it’s been a wild month, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon, wish me luck, and enjoy this selection of silly photos. ☺️
