While visiting at Tongo Oasis in Bolgatanga, we practiced the transformative art of weaving tall grasses into carrying baskets.

Under the radiant Ghanaian sun, our elders welcomed us into the heart of the Zaare tradition, guiding us through the delicate art of basket weaving.

We learned how to craft beautiful, functional baskets using traditional Zaare techniques — where every thread told a story of heritage and deep connection to the land.

This year, we invite you to experience two enriching opportunities:
✨Join our 3-hour basket weaving workshop on March 23, where creativity meets tradition.
✨Embrace an immersive experience at our new overnight campout, “Weaving with Wisdom,” from May 16-18, co-led by elders and weavers of the Maidu tribe.

Will you come weave with us this year? 🧺

In early October, the Sankofa Roots core training team journeyed to the Motherland and spent 2 weeks in Ghana 🇬🇭

Our trip was focused on community building with local land stewards, learning about ancestral foods and indigenous farm-to-table food processing practices, immersing ourselves in earth-based ancestral skills, and strengthening our team culture 🌳

We spent the first half of our trip in Bolgatonga at Tongo Oasis with @livingtheancestralway, where we transformed shea nuts into butter, practiced basket weaving, cooked local foods over open fire, learned sustainable farming practices and seed storage, and made music and danced in ceremony and community 🪘

Afterwards, we traveled deep into the forests of Eastern Ghana to camp at an eco-village with @livetolearn_learntolive, where we learned how to harvest and process local cacao, and immersed ourselves in the art of stick-and-poke tattooing 🍃

We rounded out our trip in Cape Coast and Elmina, where we met the ocean waters and took time to uncover and honor the deep history of the coast and its connection with our peoples’ displacement from our home land 🖤

Our time brought us closer to each other and to wisdom and skills stored deep within us.

We’re excited to share more about each workshop and share the skills we learned with our community in the coming months ✨

The Women of Tongo: Traditional African Architecture

Women play an important role in the planning, construction, and preservation of traditional African round/mud houses. Men, women, and children each have their specific roles from molding the blocks to the weaving of the thatch to the roofing of the house. Building a local house is a communal endeavour, the role of the women in building the house reflects the role of women in the community. Here you can see the women plastering the house as a way to maintain the upkeep of the structure. #tongoasis #traditional #indigenoushomes #localhouses #africanway #livingtheancestralway #tasteofbolga
