sometimes, images from editorial assignments end up becoming part of a larger body of work, co-existing in the same signature world, although not intended to. i never know when it's going to happen. a finance guy posing as a starfish in the middle of wall street can make for a good subject under the right conditions, even if the commission didn’t excite to begin with.

i often wish to think of myself as an invisible observer to other people’s stories, especially when it’s theirs to tell or to celebrate. but it is impossible to not let your perspective impact the story as a photographer, and frankly, i’m probably too stubborn for outside influence beyond my style. one can only hope that you continue to shoot people respectfully and with care.

2020 was the year i realized i was a closeted introvert. i got stuck in medellin, colombia with my close friend and collaborator as the pandemic made borders close overnight. it turned into a four-month long artist residency of sorts, finding ways to calm our pandemic anxieties in a household of several high-risk seniors. i’m DIY to my core, but had never attempted technical limitations in my photographic work until i were forced to in colombia, with no way to develop film, no prop stylists to hire, no access to supplies. of course, this experience wasn’t unique, but it made the result even more interesting to me, i think, seeing what comes out of collective boredom.

set alongside more tender moments from back home in norway, these images became part of “one another”, released by @pomegranate_press in 2020.

music is the highest form of art (feel free to argue with me, but i will die on this hill), and my greatest inspiration beyond the natural world. in the 2010s, i spent all my free time being destructively online, listening to self-released bedroom pop on bandcamp and talking to people with similar interests on social media. in one of these research rabbit holes, i came across a small group of musicians in karachi, making soulful, experimental music and recording it themselves. eventually, driven by curiosity for its art scene, i went to pakistan to meet my internet friends IRL.

it has spiraled into a project i’ve titled “unfinished kite”, for now, set between karachi and hunza valley, a region the climate crisis has not been kind to. it is still ongoing, so i hope to return to continue shooting this year, and is entirely reflective of my endless appreciation for nurturing art and community and safe spaces for queerness; detailing old and new friends i’ve met online or through friends there.
