Last week we were happy to make our way up to the Sunflower Mine Loop for an assessment run to check up on our past repairs and the condition of the route in general. We’re glad to see most of it holding up great, although we did find a few spots in need of some attention so we’re working on plans to get back out there and do the necessary touch up on the route.

As usual we had a blast running this favorite route of so many people and we’re looking forward to getting back out there to put in some work to keep the trail in great shape!

A huge thank you to all of the volunteers who joined us this weekend to plant native trees along Dude Creek!

It was a great day or work, putting up two large exclosures and getting hundreds of plants in the ground.

These efforts continue our habitat restoration on one of the very few Gila Trout recovery streams that we have in Arizona.

Shoutout to @wrenhousebrewing for their support of this event!

As always, we appreciate the support and collaboration of our partners on this project @tontonationalforest & @azgfd

Spent a few hours on a Saturday morning cleaning up trash & debris discarded inappropriately on Tonto National Forest out at Lower Sycamore OHV Area with @keepourdesertclean . That first truckload was collected all in the staging area, including three 5qt containers of used oil. The wind gusts were a challenge, but we still managed to fill one of the 40cy rolloff containers. I also was able to divert three red mesh bags of aluminum cans and plastic beverage bottles to recycle ♻️.

KODC has another event coming up near White Tanks, though I haven't seen the post for it yet. My understanding is that it's their large annual event and there will be plenty of raffle prizes that volunteers will have an opportunity to win by participating in the event. 🙂

@howland_studios and I spent Saturday volunteering in rim country, helping to replant willow trees along Dude Creek. This beautiful area of Arizona was impacted greatly from the Dude Fire that burned 24,000 acres and killed 6 wild land firefighters in 1990. You may also recall that this is the Fire that destroyed Zane Grey’s cabin.

The land is recovering here, but the Dude stream bed that support Gila trout recovery, still need some work.

We planted Red Willow, Goodings Willow, and Fremont Cottonwood trees to stabilize the banks, create shade for cooler ground and water temperature, and create habitat for critters.

The day didn’t suck.
I can’t wait to revisit this place here after your to see the changes.

Maybe you’de like to join these worthwhile efforts too. 🎣🌳🪾

We dont know what everyone is up to this weekend (you could head out to Sycoamore to join in on the @keepourdesertclean cleanup!) but if you’re looking for a great way to get out, give back, and make a difference next weekend be sure to check out our Bartlett Flats Cleanup! With free lunch, a raffle for volunteers and cleanup supplies provided it’s going to be a great time out on the Flats cleaning up the area and doing our part to give back to this beautiful and popular area!

In addition to our regular sponsors we’d like to give some special shout outs for sponsoring this event in particular!:

Please plan ahead folks, there are currently no trash services at the Canyon Lake Vista or any of the roadside turnouts if you're heading up there to check out the lake during the drawdown.

"The water level of Canyon Lake Arizona will be lowered for approximately 16 weeks starting Sept. 16, 2026, for critical dam safety inspections and maintenance. Tonto National Forest will close the lake on Sept. 8, including all boat ramps and access points, to prepare for the drawdown."
