13th AUGUST 2023. I did my first large mobile job, still the biggest job I’ve done mobile so far. This was before @kyle_on_the_spanners_ was even up and running.

My farther in law called me after his car started revving up on its own and then went with a large bang and large puff of white smoke. I went out to him and managed to get his car back home where I could start the diag work on what had actually happened.

I noticed that the coolant had completely gone and that where the car broke down there was oil residue from the back of the car. So I firstly topped up the coolant and pressure tested the system couldn’t find any external leaks no broken pipes pin holes in radiators nothing. So then I checked the oil and the oil level was quite high and quite slick like the oil & coolant had mixed. (And oh had it) but at this point I was unsure why. So after checking all the levels, code scanning it and turning it over with a ratchet and nothing seemed off so I gave it a start up initially nothing seemed a miss that was until about 60 seconds in and the coolant just started pressurising and flowing out of the expansion tank. I instantly knew from then the cause but to confirm my suspicions I did a head gasket test and of course it failed.

After breaking the news to my farther in law he wanted to strip it down and see how bad/ what had actually failed and if I could repair it. So that’s what I did. Unfortunately once I got the cylinder head off not only had the head gasket failed on cylinder 3 but also the block had a hole in it and had a crack going from the top to half way down the cylinder which meant game over for the block as it wasn’t cost effective to repair it.

So we went down the route of a reconditioned bare engine from parts plus, and put all new gaskets and o-rings on it along with new timing belt & water pump.

After a few days of rebuilding the new engine with new parts on my dinner. The engine was built and ready for go in, so when Saturday came around I got it in and mounted and the car started first flick of the key. Very proud moment to say the least. It’s been nearly a year now and the car is still running like a dream.

Happy days 🔧💪🏼👌🏽
