Tonight and tomorrow, 7 Cheshvan, is the yahrzeit of Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin (1887–1933).

He served as rav of Galina, Sanok and Piotrkow, represented the Jews of Poland in the Polish parliament, and in 1930 opened Yeshivat Chachmei Lublin, built so that poor students would never again have to eat at strangers' tables.

But his greatest gift is open on tables all over the world every morning. At the Knessia Gedola in Vienna in 1923, he proposed that every Jew learn the same page of Gemara each day. Daf Yomi began that Rosh Hashana. More than a century later, Jews on every continent still learn the same daf, and every seven and a half years they finish the whole Talmud together.

He passed away at 46. His last words to his students were "Only with joy."
