The Slantwise Histories: Collected Stories | Alix E. Harrow
Tordotcom | 20-Oct-26

Thank you, #partner, @Macmillianaudio, for the #gifted audiobook narrated by Jeanette Illidge, and Jenn Lee for @tordotcompub. #MACAudio2026

THE SLANTWISE HISTORIES is a collection of 16 stories, 11 previously published and 5 new. I still have a few left to listen to, but this blend of fantasy, fairy, folklore, and modern stories has kept me entertained and charmed, so much so that I plan to pick up a physical copy for my shelves.

Some favorites from the first two sections include:

💀Mr. Death – a moving story about a conflicted grim reaper who is assigned to ferry back a two-year-old boy that brought me to tears.

📜The Ransom of Miss Coraline Connelly– an amusing epistolary told via letters from an Empress fae writing from the underworld to the mother of a baby she has kidnapped.

💔The Long Way Up – a poignant reimagining of Orpheus and Eurydice that explores grief, love, trust, and mental health.

🐦‍⬛The Knight and the Butcherbird – a fantasy set in a post-apocalyptic town outside of Appalachia that explores love, grief, body horror, transformation, and the power of storytelling to shape what and how they are told.

Another favorite, The Six Deaths of the Saint, inspired her novel The Everlasting, and A Witch’s Guide to Escape: A Practical Compendium of Portal Fantasy, which I have yet to read, won the 2019 Hugo Award for Best Short Story.

The two audiobook narrators, Jeanette Illidge and Jenn Lee, did a brilliant job bringing this wide array of characters to life. Their voices added a magical quality to the stories, making them great storytellers I’d happily listen to in a grown-up version of our local bookstore’s Story Time.

If you don’t typically pick up a short story collection but are an Alix Harrow fan, or you enjoy imaginative and beautifully written prose, I encourage you to pick this one up.

If you read Harrow’s books, what is your favorite? What do you think future storytellers will say about our world today? Or what is your favorite childhood fairy tale? Do you prefer Disney’s version or the gruesome, grim versions of old fairy tales?
