When your vet recommends a full workup, bloodwork, X-rays, and hospitalization, it can feel like we’re running up the bill. Here’s what’s actually happening.

We’re required to offer you the best standard of care every time. That’s our ethical duty, and it’s also how informed consent works: you deserve to know every option before you decide. If we skip plan A because we assume you can’t afford it, we’re making your decision for you. We’re also exposing ourselves to legal risk if something goes wrong and you were never told what could have helped.

So plan A comes first. Always. That doesn’t mean it’s the only option.

We know vet care is expensive. We see the look on your face when the estimate comes out, and we don’t judge you for it. Most of us have pets of our own and know exactly how that feels.

If plan A isn’t possible, tell us. Here’s what we can often do:

🔹 Prioritize the tests and treatments that matter most right now
🔹 Start with outpatient care and monitor closely at home
🔹 Spread diagnostics across multiple visits
🔹 Talk through payment plans or financing options

Plan B isn’t a failure. Many pets do well with it. If they don’t, we reassess together and adjust.

What helps us most is honesty. Saying “I have $500 to work with” lets us build the best plan within your budget instead of guessing.

And if you’re reading this with a healthy pet, look into pet insurance now. It works best before you need it, because pre-existing conditions usually aren’t covered.

We’re not the bad guys. We’re on your pet’s team, and yours too.
