Hunters Hammocks and Radio plays with the tension between inside and outside to discuss the ways in which otherness is created and mobilized through culture. The storyline, which runs secretly under the many veils created by the dramaturgy, projects Peri and Ceci locked in an apartment in a future where forced displacements and the destruction of the environment evolve into a massive uprising. A situation that sits at the edge of fiction, deeply informed by centuries of struggle against the policies of a state of colonial origins. I arrived first at Il Guarany through its scenography, thinking about how theatre, in parallel to painting, has played its part in the romanticization of landscapes that were being torn apart to favour 'progress and modernization'. The opera found its way into the public imaginary as the opening theme of A Voz do Brasil, a radio programme created to foster an idea of nationhood that has very little to do with the diversity that composes Brazil. Looking at the libretto, and at the many forms the opera's representation has taken throughout history, was for me a way of understanding how it still indexes many other forms of violence present in our history. To mobilize a material that has occupied such an important place in Brazilian cultural history is always a bit disturbing, but for me it was never about praising what was there, but trying to unpack its relation to what seems to have stayed outside of it. The piece is about that, uncovering the bits of history present in the fiction, seeking other arrangements in search of meaning. Here are some images made by Maru Serrano and stills from the video made by Ceniza for @mmmad.art, during our premiere at @replikateatro last month. Central elements in the piece, the hammocks and the radio are not only symbolic. Through their texture and materiality, they evoke histories we sometimes, unwillingly, prefer not to recognize. The hammocks are an index of the many forms of appropriation that compose domestic space. An object marked by displacements and misplacements, still able to hold an ambiguity that feels like a powerful reflex of these complex entanglements. The radio was one of the ways Il Guarany — a kind of nationalist Brazilian opera sung in Italian — became ingrained in the public imaginary. Historically, the importance of radio is tied to the ways ideas of nationhood, land, and people were shaped and made to circulate, and it becomes, for us, a reference to AI’s persuasive and potentially manipulative power. I’m extremely happy and grateful to be working with such a beautiful and generous group. For me, this is not only the end of a cycle, but also a very special moment to celebrate the trust, desires, friendships, and the many sleepless nights that made this possible. In the middle of all the challenges, there is a real joy in seeing things come together. We premiere today at @replikateatro at 19h, as part of the programme of @mmmad.art. My most sincere gratitude to the festival for the support throughout the process, and to Replika for the generous hosting.
