Yesterday’s Celebration of Life for Maria was as lovely as we could have imagined. Thank you to everyone who attended in person or online. Thank you to the many loved ones who labored for weeks to put the event together. Thank you to Pastor Nikki for officiating. Thank you to our guest speakers for your eloquence at the podium. And thank you Maria Suarez. Thank you thank you thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️

V & I traveled to Minneapolis last week to support O as she made her mfa thesis presentation. I was filled with deep pride as we watched and listened to Olivia speak about her novel and her writing process. I was also filled with tremendous sadness, noting the absence of Maria. It’s just the 3 of us now and we have a long way to go to acclimate to this new smaller world. So grateful for you, Suarez 🤍

31 years ago today Maria and I got married on the beach in Miami. It was the start of a journey she took us on that eventually included our daughters Olivia and Vanessa. Maria’s part of the journey ended in February but our daughters and I will carry on, taking her with us. Love you, miss you Suarez. Happy anniversary. Thanks for the journey.

Maria’s expansive garden. Now that she’s gone, we have to decide how to manage the small farm she and her bestie Jim Rodney created. Maria ran the operation and made it look easy. Nothing seems easy now for any of us, but people keep showing up to help. Yesterday another bestie- Tricia- came by to weed and prune and harvest stuff before it bolts. There’s talk of a community garden or something, I don’t know. I’m busy indoors, doing the work of closing the chapter of our time with Maria, which absolutely sucks but is required. None of us want to be doing this work yet we must. Thanks to the many people who’ve sent support to us. Our hearts swell as they break ❤️

Dylanquest 2026 is in the books. This year’s quest was gloomy in weather but not in spirit. Bob’s neighborhood is lush & chill now, a stark contrast to last January’s fires. @malibuseafood keeps on keeping on & we hope for the same for everyone in LA who suffered so much loss in 2025. Thanks to the daughters for their excellent company & Dylan playlist curation. Listen to Bob, people. Read his lyrics. Nobody does it better. Ok that’s it for now ttyl bye 👋

Because it’s now December and wintery and Oldest Daughter™️was asking about nice winter jazz music to go with the snowy situ in Minneapolis, my mind immediately traveled to 1991 and this particular song. The last song on Sonny Sharrock’s stunning Ask The Ages album, Once Upon a Time induced an intense reverie in me. I was not alone in this feeling, as it seems almost every musician friend in Wicker Park had the same reaction. I’d hear it almost nightly at the Rainbo, at Idful, in various apartments and lofts… as ubiquitous as Slint’s Spiderland (which also came out in 1991). I don’t know if the recordings were done during winter or if it came out in winter, but somehow my sense memories associated with Ask The Ages are wintery: the squeaking below-zero snow underfoot, the stillness of the city late at night on cold walks to the studio or a bar or Duks, the wave of humidity/heat/cigarette smoke that would hit you as you entered the Rainbo’s confines, peeling off your suddenly-too-warm winter coat and scarf, the blessed somber quiet of the city during an evening snowstorm… What a treasure to have music to soundtrack your life, to heighten moments that could otherwise be boring or a bummer (long walks in the dark in Jan? Really?). This making and recording of music really is amazing, isn’t it? Ok that’s it for now ttyl bye ❤️

When I was in college at NIU I chopped up a window sticker so it read “Northren Iloinils Uvniserity” & stuck it on my Renault LeCar. The reactions from friends & strangers were hilarious & continued for years until that beauty was taken out by a surgeon in a rush to the hospital in Chicago. RIP $500 LeCar. I swore to myself (& any poor soul forced to listen) that someday I’d have kids who went to colleges & I would chop up their schools’ stickers & place them on my car to much merriment. I’ve had the pleasure & luck to do that, first with Pomona College (Ponoma Clolege) & now these 2 fine institutions of higher learning. The Mini spends most of its days under a car cover but when it does make an appearance, this always makes me laugh. Ok that’s it for now ttyl bye ✌️
