DI : Post-processing. How much is too much?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Uma: Post processing is an essential and powerful tool that if used right can help bridge the gap between what your eyes see and what the camera manages to capture.

How it is wielded and to what end is up to the photographer’s judgement and whether it’s too much or not enough can only be judged subjectively within the context of their work.

Personally, I only use post processing to crop, color grade and basic cleaning wherever necessary. As fashion/beauty image creators it is our responsibility to not use the tools at our disposal to create images that will further distort the already skewed idea of beauty in this world.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I support using it to tell fantastical stories that amaze rather than put out uninspired lies that damages people.

DI: What does it take to prepare for a photo shoot?

UD: In a commissioned project I start by understanding what the client’s vision and inspirations are.
I then try to find a feeling/idea that can form the emotional core of the structure I’m about to build. This emotional core could just be a poem, or a piece of music. I then make a rudimentary skeleton of a moodboard around this central feeling so the client and the team can access that feeling inside my head.

Sometimes it does happen that the emotion I associate with the project is not shared by the client after which it’s often rocky bumpy path all the way to the end of the project.

But when it turns out that we do agree on the emotional core of the project, oh the joy of it. it’s like riding on a wave that both supports you and carries you exactly where you need to go to realise this dream that you both now share. Everything from putting together a team, doing the shoot, all the way to selection, colour grading and editing is a purely joyful experience.

With personal work you are not negotiating for your idea or trying to fit it inside someone’s vision which is great. The challenging part then is to overcome your own inertia, organise and make the project happen. This is much harder than doing commissioned work, but it is often only through working on project such as these, do you stumble upon something that can sometimes completely change the course of your style and body of work.

DI: What subjects interest you the most in photography?

UD: Women. With all their loveliness, complexity, conflicts, vulnerability and strength. Given a choice I’d never shoot anyone else.
