From ‘tea’ to ‘shade’ to ‘realness,’ a lot of the words we see and use every day have deep roots in drag and in particular the black drag community. Each day this week we’ll be celebrating these words and phrases with our #DragDictionary spotlight, so check back as we #ThankAQueen and give credit where credit is due. #HappyBdayRuPaul (Artwork courtesy of the brilliant @totes.jorge)

If you've ever seen someone “serving up ____ realness,” #ThankAQueen. With a long history in the drag community (as famously documented in the 1990 documentary ‘Paris Is Burning’), ‘realness’ is our #DragDictionary spotlight today.

Next time you spot someone “throwing shade” online, #ThankAQueen. The concept of ‘shade,’ today’s #DragDictionary spotlight, has existed in the American black experience since slavery. The term was brought to the mainstream via 1980s Manhattan ballroom culture and ‘Paris Is Burning,’ in which famed performer Dorian Corey notes: “Shade is, I don't tell you you're ugly, but I don't have to tell you, because you know you're ugly. And that's shade.” (For more reading on its history, check the link in our bio.)

#ThankAQueen if you've ever urged a friend to “spill the tea.” Today’s #DragDictionary spotlight ‘tea’ has a long history in black drag culture, with one of our earliest citations coming from famed Savannah performer The Lady Chablis in John Berendt’s 1994 non-fiction bestseller ‘Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil.’ (For further reference check the link in our bio.)

Often paired with words like ‘realness’ and ‘looks,’ today’s #DragDictionary spotlight ‘serve’ stems from the largely black and Latinx communities of 1980s Manhattan ballrooms. Ballroom culture itself dates back to the late 1800s, famously taking hold in 1920s Harlem, which held grand gatherings described by poet Langston Hughes as “spectacles in color.” #thankaqueen

Early evidence shows that ‘read,’ today’s #DragDictionary spotlight, did not originate in drag but rather among American black women in the 1950s. It was then picked up by the queer black femme community, who brought it to the 1980s ballroom scene where it was introduced to the world at large through ‘Paris Is Burning.’ #thankaqueen

Our final #DragDictionary spotlight is ‘beat.’ If you’ve ever referred to the application of makeup as “beating your face,” #ThankAQueen for this term that has been popular in drag culture for decades. (And thanks again to the exquisitely talented @totes.jorge for these designs!)
