This is my crazy masterpiece.
My brand. My movement.
But the journey was very lonely in my creation.
And brought to life only through collaboration.
I had learned to live with my isolation.
Until my body just couldn’t anymore.
A year ago I woke up to the reality I was unhappy.
Took me a year to unpack why.
I wanted to leave my husband.
I could not find the energy for my career.
But I found the source of my pain,
Feeling alone,
Not feeling loved and fulfilled in my relationships.
Terrified my perfect family was going to break.
But I broke instead.
I had a nervous breakdown.
Walking around my neighborhood in the middle of many nights, smoking cigarettes.
Felt shame for smoking.
Was afraid to hug or kiss my husband.
I found the gottam bottom.
And when my heart could not cough up the truth, my body did.
I was shaking and crying sitting on our bed when I told him I wanted to leave him if things didn’t change.
The pain I knew I caused him.
And we took a step back, and WE picked up the fucking pieces to both of us.
I stood in the truth of who I was, opened my heart to him and exposed every secret and fear I have ever had.
And he held it. He sorted it.
We did our work.
We fell back in love.
I wish it was as glamorous as I am romanticizing it to be right now, because it hurt. It still hurts. We still rub up against the wounds of our patterns every single day.
But we are in process.
I am in process.
Of dealing with all of the relationships I let slip in midst of my mania.
Of having grace for myself that I have been not the best mother, wife, daughter, sister or friend in the past year.
I look back at the images we created early this summer with reverence and pain.
I was broken on this set.
On the edge of stepping into myself, and not sure how to navigate.
But today, I celebrate the fact that I channeled my pain, frustration, optimism for a better life and creative genius into a brand I really love and am proud of.
And I thank the women and the man who got me here.
This is @wethedaughters, and we want to burn the feminine hygiene aisle to the ground and have a real conversation in the world about women’s wellbeing.
