PUSO welcomes and celebrates Filipino American History Month! 🇵🇭🇺🇲

PUSO celebrates the richness and unity of our cultures, and we highlight the impactful contributions, stories, and experiences of our Filipino community in the healthcare field, including Dr. Fe del Mundo, who founded the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines (featured on the left of our graphic).

We also highlight the invaluable contributions of labor leaders like Larry Itliong, regarded as "one of the Fathers of the West Coast labor movement". Larry Itliong (featured on the right of our graphic) was among those who fought for fair and equal wages for farm workers, and whose impacts are felt even to this day.

October is chosen as Filipino American History Month as this marks the anniversary of the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, on October 18, 1587, at what is now Morro Bay, California. In 2006, California formally recognized the celebration, and in 2009, the U.S. Congress officially recognized October as Filipino American History Month.

Throughout history, we as a Filipino community have had numerous triumphs and successes, but also had and continue to have challenges even to this day that we still face and have yet to overcome.
Even as this may be, we continue to move forward, as a people of hope, of strength, united and guided by our spirit of Bayanihan and pakikipag-kapwa tao, uplifting our communities and our voices, because we are Filipino, in thoughts, words, and deeds.

Happy Filipino American History Month!!

The dedication of the new Lander Hall gym was a heartfelt tribute to the life and legacy of @usnavy Lt. Ruth Cortes, a beloved TUC alumna, veteran, and healthcare leader. ❤️

Earning her @tuc_pas.mph degrees in 2012, Lt. Cortes devoted her life to serving others, both in uniform and through patient care. Though her passing in 2019 was a profound loss, her compassion, dedication, and impact continue to inspire our community every day.

We are honored to remember her and ensure that her legacy lives on for future generations of students.

Visit the link to learn more about Lt. Cortes’ lasting impact on her family, friends, and the @tourocalifornia community!

Community in action.🌱💙

Vallejo People’s Garden was honored to welcome incoming Touro University students for their Day of Service!

Nearly 100 students signed up to volunteer at the VPG — our largest volunteer group ever! Seeing so many people working together in the garden was pretty incredible.

A community garden is about so much more than what we grow in the ground. It’s about connection, stewardship, service, and showing up for one another.

Welcome, incoming Touro students, and thank you for helping our garden grow. 🌿
