TPC Wisconsin might have more water in play than just about any course I’ve played in Wisconsin.

During the several times I’ve visited @tpcwisconsin in Madison including my first time actually playing it last month, I’ve been struck by how beautifully the ponds, wetlands and waterways are incorporated into the layout - and even more so by some of the most spectacular playing conditions I’ve experienced ANYWHERE.

The fairways are incredible, the greens are absolutely perfect and I found the golf experience to be every bit as enjoyable as the setting was beautiful.

As a 9-handicap who has a tendency to spray tee shots, I expected to be reaching in my bag for new balls all day, but the course was much more forgiving than I expected. And immaculate, with lightning fast playing surfaces!

There’s a fascinating story behind those conditions, and much of it begins with the water.

During TPC Wisconsin’s transformation from the former Cherokee Country Club, approximately 35 acres of wetlands were restored or enhanced. Waterways were excavated, invasive vegetation removed and native plant communities reestablished, creating a remarkable setting that requires ongoing ecological care.

Meanwhile, Superintendent Eric Leonard and his team face another challenge beneath the turf.

The property was extensively sand-capped using glacial sand found on-site. That helps produce the firm, well-drained conditions players love, but sand’s limited ability to hold water and nutrients makes irrigation and fertility management especially demanding. It also creates disease-management challenges. Eric’s team now treats approximately 30 acres to prevent Pythium Root Dysfunction, which has affected tees, approaches and fairways - not just putting surfaces.

It’s easy to appreciate TPC Wisconsin’s beauty and conditioning as a golf enthusiast. Understanding the challenges Eric and his team face behind the scenes makes the experience that much more impressive.

If you live near #Madison and have been on the fence about joining a private #golf club, there couldn’t be a better time to take that next leap forward.

With the supply of public golf in the metro area continuing to contract into the 2027 season (due to course renovations and partial closures), accessible tee times will be hard to secure at a time when golf demand is at an all-time high. Joining a private club is one way to buck this trend, ensuring ready access to a beautiful, well-kept golf property and all the high-end amenities and membership camaraderie that come with it.

As the season wore on and I found myself with large open spots in my golf calendar, I took it upon myself to play and photograph all of the immediate Madison area’s private clubs, documenting the current state of many of Dane County’s finest golf facilities.

After wrapping up this tour on Friday, here is how I’d rank each club (scroll for more). I’ll caveat that I thoroughly enjoyed my time at all seven spots, as evidenced by how tightly packed they are in my overall ranking of courses I’ve played (also shown in the following slides).

While Madison might not have a Top 10 or even Top 15 private course in the state, it boasts impressive depth - there simply isn’t a low tier club in my hometown.

Each venue possesses a unique design that will challenge your golf game in different ways, touring beautiful sites along the lakefront, next to nature preserves and within luxurious communities.

All seven clubs also shine with exceptional course conditions, exquisite amenities and friendly, welcoming staffs.
