$EFS #48: Multiple research groups have shown that adapting to a low-carbohydrate high-fat (LCHF) diet compromises an athlete’s ability to oxidize carbohydrate-based fuels, even following short-term restoration of high-carbohydrate feeding and high CHO availability. Compromising the athlete’s ability to oxidize the most efficient fuel that is available to support high-intensity exercise is detrimental to performance outcomes. This happens for multiple reasons, one of which is the fact that carbohydrate oxidation, which produces a significantly larger fraction of the reducing equivalent NADH (relative to FADH2), allows the athlete to resynthesize more adenosine triphosphate (ATP) per unit of oxygen consumed, compared to beta-oxidation. Preferential reliance on fat-based pathways for ATP production translates into a higher oxygen cost and decreased exercise economy (PMID 28012184). Original article by EliteFuelingScience. © 2026.
