US Delegation Visit Highlight Part 1!

Japanese American history and perspective are essential to understanding American democracy in practice, dialogue, and US-Japan relations. On the first day of the US Delegation Visit, the Fellows immersed themselves in Little Tokyo, exploring Japanese American and Asian American histories of identity, solidarity, and community building.

Mike Murase, a longtime activist and community leader, kindly spent the entire day with the Fellows, guiding them through Little Tokyo. His walking tour revealed the powerful history of solidarity that lies beneath the surface of what we see in Little Tokyo today.

The day was packed with learning opportunities, including a lecture on the Asian American Movement by UCLA’s Asian American Studies Center, a panel discussion on “Postwar Activism and Community Building” with Little Tokyo community members and activists, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the Japanese American National Museum (JANM)’s collections storage. The Fellows had an opportunity to see artifacts that tell the Japanese American stories, drawn from the JANM’s collection of more than 160,000 artifacts.

THEY CALL US PREPARING FOR THE INEVITABLE. @originalspin and @angryasianman welcome their old friends @georgekiriyama and @traciakemi1, siblings who recently lost their mother, Ikuko Kiriyama, to talk about remembrance, grief (or pre-grief), and letting go. They share personal stories of the Kiriyama family’s journey with loss; the role of caregiving and supporting aging parents; the lessons learned from honoring a loved one’s legacy; and the emotional process of letting go and moving forward. Listen/subscribe on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Happy belated bday to @bellevilles! ! I really do need to organize my pictures because I went to FB to pull pics and why did it showed me the oldest pics of us.

The first picture may have been the first picture I have of Belle and that is 2002 in the very first art community event we ever worked on.

I didn't realize how this continued on for the next 20+ years. Belle is the one who hypes us up, cheers us on, sees all things possible. All that AND she's a Virgo? That's rare. I rarely meet an energetic positive-minded Virgo.

I was going to find a pic and post a story but I spent a good hour going down memory lane.

Happy birthday, Belle!

There's so much bad shit out in the world. Community, friends, and family remind me to live fully and work for a better world. Asian AF, seeing Wabich play at the 1881, Geneva's birthday, family reunion with cousin Lee and her family, and Azeem's birthday and album release. I'm so lucky to be surrounded by amazing people.

Warning: huge LA photo dump! We just got back from a trip to CA where our daughter Mukti was poked, prodded, scanned and put in giant machines for a special research study to treat many of her regression symptoms over the last year. What a year it has been: we’ve been stretched in ways we never thought possible…and we are stronger for it. ❤️ We ended the week with wonderful visits with family, friends, and a sweet little party that reminded us what’s most important in life: love, connection, music, and cake!!
