Half marathon - 1:12:40 - smiling through the pain

The one where I had no idea what I was gonna do and it paid off. 3 years ago this race broke my heart and I immediately texted @juris.silenieks and said I needed his help and the journey had been amazing, can’t wait to see what’s next.

I prayed for days like today and still can’t believe it happened!

Chicago recap! 2:52:05 Not my day, and a lot went wrong. But first, I’m so grateful for my family, friends, and especially my @grc_running and @tracksmithstamata families, who cheer me on regardless of my marathon time. ❤️

Lessons learned:

1. Over hydration can be just as bad as dehydration. After Berlin 2025 and some close calls this summer, I definitely have heat trauma and overcompensated. (TMI ahead) I went pee 5x times in the 90 minutes before the race, and my urine was still clear the next day, even after vomiting for ~18 miles. I suspect this contributed to my nausea after gel #2 and possibly my quad issues.
2. The fanciest shoes aren’t for everyone. I’m a proud heel striker, and I learned the hard way that the Puma Fast-Rs might be the worst shoes for me past a 5k. I’ve NEVER had my quads blow up so early in a marathon, especially on a flat course at that pace. I’m going back to less shiny, more stable racers. I did most of my build and MP work in non plated ASICS Superblasts and wish I’d raced in them.
3. I don’t think I went out too fast? I averaged 6:04/mile for the first ~11 miles and honestly felt great until I puked and my quads blew around miles 10–11.
4. My quads apparently ran the entire marathon alone. They’re the ONLY thing sore. My calves, glutes, and hamstrings seem to have taken the day off. Excited to work with my PT @drsarahweimerpt on strength training!
5. I still love the marathon. Even on my worst days, if I’m not seriously injured, DNFing isn’t an option for me. I have no pride (not in a bad way). I’ll keep showing up and giving it another go, regardless of the goal or time I’m chasing.
6. I’m letting go of the OTQ (not in a bad way). I just want to PR again, and keep PRing, finding out what I’m capable of, and giving it my all. Whatever time that ends up being, I’ll be happy with it.
7. Unpopular opinion, but I like hills in my marathons.

Not the Chicago I envisioned, but there’s always another marathon (hopefully a colder one) and many more miles to run with my friends. ❤️ #chicagomarathon #marathonrecap

Fall training camp with Tracksmith Stamata ✨

I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off fall training than to be with this team on the beautiful roads of Glen Arbor, working together as we all chase the Olympic Trials qualifier. There’s a bond within this group that makes these camps so special.

Thank you @tracksmithstamata for the miles, laughs, and memories.🤍

Bronx 10 mile champ 54:51 on Saturday, pacing the @nyrr 18 mile training run series on Sunday. Let’s start with the 10 mile: vibes were high that morning, 13,000 runners lining up. I had no idea where my fitness was at. I’ve been putting in the work, with just 4 weeks since my fall and knee injury so was a little unsure of my target pace. I trusted my instincts, ran a negative split race, shared some miles with Queen and stud @bad_boys104. Threw down last 4 miles with a friendly downhill last mile in 5:03 and all those heading out on course cheering hard for me!

Just for all you training curious nerds out there, I have not touched a mile under 5:35 in practice. Not 1 full mile under 5:35 and averaged 5:29 for 10 miles. Recovered all day Saturday after drug testing and rolled into Sunday with the honors of pacing the sub 3 hour @nyrr marathon group @ 6:52s. We ran in pouring rain, 3 loops of Central Park and a whole lot of badass runners out on the course. I thought my double last December of US Cross Saturday and pacing CIM Sunday was gangsta, but this weekend got pretty close. 6 weeks until @nycmarathon. Building momentum for some exciting races ahead and can’t wait to share what my next adventure brings and who’s on it with me.

Lastly, I’m about 16 years into my pro running career. If you’re pro now, I hope you find moments to step outside the highest pressure moments and really entrench yourself into the running world. Meet the people in the races with you. Meet the people lining the corrals and volunteering. You’re missing a big part of this journey if you don’t. I don’t ever regret not trying hard enough to reach all of my goals, but I would regret not taking the time to look around, to look behind you in the corrals, to notice others on their journeys.

Massive thanks to @nyrr @dorian_kail and more for making this weekend possible! To @runningonveggies for the nutritious fuel and dinner for 2 pre race🫶🏻. Ok I’m sufficiently tired, flying back to AZ as we speak and looking forward to snuggling my husband and kids tonight! #oldandfit
