New curation project has unEarthed!

Through my climate work, I’ve wanted to bring together artists who acknowledge our present environmental moment while imagining pathways toward reconnection and renewal with our living planet. I’m proud to announce unEarthed → reRooting, my latest curation project with the New York Artists Circle (NYAC), co-curated with artist Danielle Warren.

In a time of profound environmental crisis, unEarthed → reRooting brings to light the hidden, disrupted, and complex connection many of us have with the Earth. It explores what it means to unearth: revealing extractions toll, uncovering suppressed stories, discovering disrupted ecologies, and reclaiming deep spiritual and biological connections. And what it means to reroot–repairing, reimagining, and reweaving our relationship with the Earth and one another.

This is a call for collective climate action. In shared reflection, it invites us to face what is broken so that renewal–and transformation–can take root.

OPENS:
Sunday, January 11th from 12 - 4:00 pm

At 1 pm and 3 pm, don’t miss the “Umbilical Walk” performance featuring January Yoon Cho and Georgina Bates!

First Presbyterian Church’s Great Hall Gallery (5th Ave & 12th St, NY) and online

Jenny Lynn Wool Creations was inspired by my Traditional Rug Hooking hobby. It began by making wool flowers to use as applique, and one thing led to another.

I am excited to share my most recent project with you. It combines several techniques, some of which I am just now experiencing for the first time. This painting in wool includes coiling (quilling), folded & standing wool inspired by Tracy Jamar and mastered with the help of Lynne Powell. Tracy Jamar is the author of, Coils, Folds, Twists, and Turns. Thank you, Janet, for sharing Tracy's book with me! My project also includes floral applique, and traditional rug hooking in a 6 cut, dies purchased from The Old Tattered Flag.

Pattern is coming soon and will be available on my website.

Day 87: #HHC 100days

Tracy Jamar, USA, Land Parcel Quads - #3 Fly Over Series, 2009, Mixed fibres on Monk’s Cloth. 37 x 37 in / 4 pieces 18 x 18 in.

Striking.

Masterfully integrating multiple mediums into a flowing composition.

A strong colour palette that reflects the inherent energy of her subject.

Tracy Jamar’s 2009 artwork, “Land Parcel Quads—#3 Fly Over Series,” is a search for home through an interconnected topographic mapping of terrains. Her series reflects a universal quest for safety, security, and stability, capturing the deep energy connections running between land masses, culture, and community.

It’s gorgeous.

With careful selection, Tracy combines old, new, and repurposed materials, with found objects, in a process that affords her great spontaneity and reliance on intuition. Her work showcases a variety of techniques, including traditional hand hooking, appliqué, collage, and machine stitching.

Drawing inspiration from the significant role of textiles—“women’s work”—Jamar’s portfolio explores political, social, religious, and personal topics.

Tracy Jamar, a former antiques dealer with over 30 years of experience, specialized in restoring antique quilts and hooked rugs.

She left antiques to take her undergraduate degree in 2009 from Goddard College, Vermont, where she studied American history through women’s handmade textiles. Her studies enhanced her commitment to contemporary fibre works, blending her admiration for early American textiles with modern construction techniques. Wonderful!

Tracy has received numerous honours and awards. She has showcased her work in exhibitions across the USA, Japan, and South Korea, including three solo exhibits.

She is also an accomplished author. Her book, entitled ‘Coils, Folds, Twists, and Turns: Contemporary Techniques in Fiber’ contributes to documentation on American handmade rugs.

Tracy continues to celebrate and document the rich tapestry of women’s contributions to textile art through her art and writing. Bravo!

I love gallery-hopping in Chelsea — always plenty of textile art to see!

First stop, this wonderful felted work, “Both Sides Now,” by TSGNY member Susan Kaplow @kaplowsusan at the “Black and White Thinking” exhibit at @ceresgallerynyc. Up until January 28.

Then, met up with fellow TSGNY members at @sikkemajenkins to see the group exhibition “Reverb.” This is a terrific show featuring four artists, including textile art pioneer Sheila Hicks. An artist whom I had not previously known about, Arturo Herrera @arturoherrerastudio, is showing vibrant works which are silkscreened on cut-out felt. Also up until January 28.

Always fun to see art with like-minded friends!
