I fully support kids getting into jiu jitsu or any sport, or whatever they dream of doing but I’m seeing so many little kids with their own Instagram pages, and parents posting tons of photos of their children.

I get it. You’re the parent, and I don’t have kids of my own so maybe take what I say with a grain of salt but posting your kids publicly gives strangers access to them. With how fast AI is advancing, people can take your child’s photos and do god knows what with them. They can also trace your kids, learn about them through the page, learn their routines, schedules, etc.

Kids also can’t consent to this, so as they get older, they might find what you posted embarrassing, or they might just want their privacy back.

I think teens can have social media though, but with real guardrails and boundaries. I’m all for kids competing, chasing sponsorships, and raising money to compete. I just think there has to be a limit. We shouldn’t be exposing our kids to everybody.

This isn’t about one name in the headlines. It’s about a system that protects the people at the top instead of the people on the mats. Ask your gym what its safeguarding policy is. If they don’t have one, that’s your answer. When someone comes forward, believe them.

First, I want to be clear that about 95% of Victory MMA’s coaches and members are good people. This concerns my experience with the owner and Victory Ultra instructors.
I repeatedly raised safety concerns about two people being allowed into Victory Ultra’s competition training.
The first is a minor, so I will not name him or post his photo. Parents and others reported inappropriate physical conduct with girls at Atos, and I was told police reports were filed. I did not personally witness the alleged conduct. I informed Colby but felt dismissed. He said he did not care and that it would fall on Victory, not him. I then met privately with one of the owners along with Nico because we wanted to protect the good people at the gym. At first, he seemed to take it seriously, and the front desk staff tried to help.
Joe later claimed the minor had been removed four months earlier, but I have a dated photo showing him training there about one month ago. Joe also said he was not a member. My understanding was that Mike and Colby were allowing him into class. He was eventually removed. Niko also raised concerns and was later removed from the gym.
The second person is Nicholas Schultz. Public reporting confirms he was charged with sexual abuse offenses in Washington, D.C., in 2013 and found not guilty by a jury. I am not claiming he was convicted. My concern is that Mike and Colby allowed him to train despite the history of the case. I have a photo of him training there. I was told he was introduced under another name, but I did not personally witness that. Once members learned who he was, many said they did not want him there.
Several parents also contacted Victory about the minor. I tried to handle this privately because I care about the good people at the gym. Joe later accused me of spreading rumors and told me I was no longer welcome.

Professores e treinadores podem exercer uma autoridade significativa na vida de um atleta. O treinamento envolve contato físico. Aulas particulares podem criar oportunidades de contato individual. Competições podem envolver viagens e hospedagens. As equipes podem se tornar comunidades muito próximas.

E oportunidades como competições, patrocínios, viagens e progressão dentro do esporte podem criar dinâmicas de poder adicionais. Nada disso é inerentemente prejudicial. Mas essas circunstâncias podem ser exploradas.

Os exemplos específicos de BJJ apresentados neste post são uma aplicação, por parte da OGF, de conceitos de proteção e prevenção já estabelecidos à nossa comunidade, com base em nossa experiência dentro do BJJ e nas histórias e preocupações compartilhadas pela comunidade.

Não estamos dizendo que um comportamento isolado significa automaticamente que um aliciamento está acontecendo.

O aliciamento envolve padrões, progressão, contexto e relações de poder. Compreender esses padrões dá à nossa comunidade uma chance maior de reconhecer comportamentos preocupantes antes que eles se agravem.

Este é o início de uma conversa que a OGF acredita que o BJJ precisa ter.

Grooming doesn’t always look like abuse. It can look like mentorship. Friendship. Special attention. Protection. Opportunity.

So why are we talking about grooming specifically in BJJ? Because BJJ has characteristics that can make some grooming behaviors harder to recognize.

Coaches can hold significant authority in an athlete’s life. Training involves physical contact. Private lessons can create one-on-one access. Tournaments can involve travel and overnight stays. Teams can become close-knit communities.
And opportunities like competition, sponsorships, travel, and advancement can create additional power dynamics. None of these things are inherently harmful. But they can be exploited.

The BJJ-specific examples in this post are OGF’s application of established safeguarding concepts to our community, informed by our experience within BJJ and the stories and concerns that have been shared within the community.

We are not saying that any individual behavior automatically means grooming is occurring.
Grooming is about patterns, progression, context, and power. Understanding those patterns gives our community a better chance of recognizing concerning behavior before it escalates.

This is the beginning of a conversation OGF believes BJJ needs to have.

Um fisioterapeuta denunciou à Polícia Civil a suposta falsificação de sua assinatura em um laudo apresentado pela defesa de Melqui Galvão.
