The 5 Biggest Causes of Water Retention

1. High Salt Intake (Suddenly)
Salt itself isn’t bad but sudden increases can cause the body to hold water to maintain balance.

One salty meal ≠ fat gain.

2. Carbohydrates
Carbs are stored as glycogen, and for every 1g of glycogen, the body stores -3g of water.
That’s why:
• Carb refeed = weight jump
• Low-carb week = fast drop
It’s water, not fat.

3. Stress & Poor Sleep
High cortisol = more water retention.
Less sleep → more inflammation → more fluid retention.
This is why stress management matters for fat loss.

4. Hormonal Fluctuations (Especially in Women)
During:
• PMS
• Menstrual cycle changes
• Perimenopause
The body naturally retains more water.
Completely normal. Not a setback.

5. Hard Training / Muscle Soreness
Intense workouts cause micro-damage in muscles → inflammation → water retention.
Ironically:
The harder you train, the more water you may hold temporarily.
