December 6, 1966 – January 6, 2018. On Sunday, I celebrated the life of David Arnold Jacobs, a man I am proud to call my father.
My father and I had a very difficult relationship. He prioritized his passion, jiu-jit-su, over our family. I can’t lie and say that his choices don't still hurt, because they do. But before I came home for winter break, I felt like God was speaking to me and he told me that my family needed to pray over my dad.
So finally On New Years Day, my father came over to the house. It started off like every other family interaction, we argued about who should pray first and finally my mom volunteered as tribute.
After Mom, Naomi and Paul prayed it was my turn. I prayed for my dad’s mental and physical health in 2018, and I prayed for forgiveness. I prayed that I could have peace and be able to truly forgive him for the choices that he made. I prayed that we could be a family again. When I finished, to my astonishment… my dad prayed. Never in my 20 years had I heard him pray. When he prayed, he finally accepted responsibility for his actions, he expressed remorse, he acknowledged his wrong doings, he prayed for forgiveness and for renewal, he prayed to change. Then we all group hugged. Afterwards he was so happy he talked for days about how much peace he had and how much better he felt. He passed away three days later.
At the end, I think he finally realized that the only way he would ever feel complete is with Jesus. My dad made mistakes but I have no doubt that he tried to do his best. Despite everything, I love my dad, and through this journey of forgiveness I’ve realized, I always loved my dad, regardless of his decisions. I am so grateful for the final moments I got to share with him. I urge you all to hug your families close, because tomorrow isn’t promised. Love and appreciation can never be overly expressed. Rest in Peace Dad, I love you so much, you will forever live on in my heart and memories.
