Meet our first BRAVE FUTURES: THRIVING WHILE TRANS featured artist, Jahmia Phillips (@jahmiaphillips) Jahmia Phillips (They/Them) is a Peabody award-winning and three-time Emmy-nominated Black trans filmmaker from Chicago. They possess a rich background spanning documentary, broadcast journalism, and independent cinema. They are the Founder and Director of Photography at Chroma Obsidia (@chromaobsidia), an independent production company dedicated to fostering a more inclusive and representative media landscape — one where underrepresented narratives aren’t just seen, but centered. What does it mean to thrive while trans? 🏳️‍⚧️ ✨ On November 19, in observance of Trans Day of Remembrance, we gather in NYC for the world premiere of Brave Futures: Thriving While Trans—three short documentaries honoring the past, celebrating the present, and imagining the futures we deserve. Meet our brilliant filmmakers: Jahmia Phillips (@jahmiaphillips) from North Carolina, Janine Anne Uyanga (@janinestagram) from California, and Trey Jordan (@trey.films) from New York ! With just two weeks, the latest iPhone, their communities, and boundless imagination, these Black trans storytellers embraced the spirit of Sankofa — reaching back to honor those who came before us while imagining new possibilities for trans life, joy, and liberation. #BraveFutures is a filmmaking program powered by Open Television (OTV). In the run up to the election the anti-trans slurs used by Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are deeply concerning. As I wrote in @msnownews “dehumanizing language is how permission for violence takes hold. When people in power treat a group as not equal, it can send the signal that abusing or even killing members of that group is acceptable. For transgender Americans, this historic precedent is already a reality” We should all watch what comes next to see if it’s a larger green light for widespread anti-trans action.

Today, we do not celebrate a “discovery.” O “Columbus Day” On this #IndigenousResistanceDay, we honor more than 500 years of dignity, memory, and resistance among our Indigenous peoples in all Abya Yala!! Our history did not begin in 1492; our cultures, languages, and ancestral knowledge already existed long before colonization. Our lands were invaded, our territories taken, and borders imposed upon us. Foreign languages and colonial cultures were forced upon our communities, but our roots were never erased. Today, wearehere,and we are not going anywhere! #Aquiestamos y no nos vamos , Our Indigenous immigrant communities continue to resist. Our resistance lives on through our dances, traditions, and cultural diversity, including Indigenous Two-Spirit and multispirit people. We defend our #humanrights, our identities, and our autonomy. This #october12 listen to our voices, and all days respect our cultures, and support Indigenous artisans, craftspeople, and organizations. Defending our peoples also means protecting Mother Earth. This is a day when a lot of lgbtq+ people will “come out” to friends and family and tell people their authentic identities! Coming out is not a one-time experience and it is completely different for every person! Today can be really special if you do choose to come out, but also don’t feel pressured! If you haven’t come out, can’t because of safety reasons, or don’t feel the need, you are still valid and so loved💖 I love being part of this community and the support we give each other is so special! “Hosting this offering on my actual bday is an act of love and deep activation of the portal for black trans liberation. It is a time for making healing change. It’s the baptism of freedom.” — Artist Odaymar Cuesta The Black Healing Portal (BHP) is resiliencia transformativa—a weaving of space and time, and a continuing project of Odaymar Cuesta’s life. It is a collaboration centering the life and artistic work of an Afro-Caribbean, self-created transfeminist warrior: queer afrodiasporique en movimiento. Its authenticity emerges from radical self-representation. With Goddess and Spirits, BHP invites participants on an extraordinary, transcendental journey exploring race, religion, gender, temporality, class, and sexuality through art. La música como espíritu de la práctica y el cuerpo como alma del ritual—music as the spirit of the practice and the body as the soul of the ritual—to invert the margins, subvert hierarchies, and reactivate ciclos sagrados: Individualidad / Energía colectiva, Individualidad / Energía colectiva. Offering the Black Healing Circle on Odaymar’s birthday adds another sacred dimension: honoring the artist’s arrival into the world through the healing practice they continue to create. The celebration becomes a reciprocal offering—Odaymar shares their art and ritual with the community, and the community gathers to nourish and celebrate the artist. This cycle of giving and receiving affirms that the wounded healer also deserves care, joy, and renewal. BHP imagines that magical healing is possible.
