We are excited to welcome Matt @transmigrationwoodworking and his upcycled skateboard goods to The Market.
And this is his story: Transmigration Woodworking was born from a lifelong passion for skateboards, a passion for woodworking, and a catastrophic injury.
Skateboarding was my first great love. The moment I stepped on a skateboard, I knew I was hooked. I enjoyed skating nearly every day until February of 2016, when one bad landing crushed my left tibial plateau and left me immobile and unable to walk or drive for 4 months. The transition from active, daily skater to couchbound invalid took a major toll on my mental health. I knew I’d be able to skate again, but never the way I’d skated before the injury. Thankfully, a good friend saw that I was struggling. He set up the lathe in his woodshop so I could use it despite my injury, and he started picking me up a couple times a week so I could learn how to use it. My grandfather was a woodworker, and I’d always enjoyed helping him with projects. He was a man of few words, so I cherished every moment I could spend being creative and woodworking with him.And I discovered my second great love: the wood lathe. The energy I’d previously dedicated to skating now went into woodturning. Like learning to ollie, I practiced again and again until I’d perfected a turning technique. That’s when I realized there was a way to marry my two great loves.I’d been inspired by several woodworkers on Instagram who used old and broken skateboards as their medium. I had my own stack of decommissioned boards, so I decided to give it a try. But this wasn’t like learning to ollie—this was more like a kickflip. Where previously I could cut a wood blank to work on the lathe, now I had to remove grip tape and its sticky residue, sand off the art and clear coat from each board, then cut and glue boards into a blank I could work. But turning these blocks was a revelation. What had once been a splintered pile of useless skateboards became a collection of dazzlingly striped and patterned housewares and artwork. And this Transmigration Woodworking was born.

The Market is presented & curated by @independentgoods & Whytecloud Mountain Gems
