Yesterday I cried a lot. It feels like an ocean of my tears cannot compare to what Marcellus’ loved ones must be feeling now. I felt so safe to cry in front of my community. So many people brought me comfort. I felt pretty isolated in this experience, organizing alone for the first time, hoping that more people would be there, would be as outraged as me. That more people would have BEEN speaking about this. That more people would have tried to prevent his loss in the first place. I felt sad not seeing more black community and more leaders. But I was so grateful for Connor (@transsourpatchkid ) for coming out and speaking with me. I have been marching w this kid and fighting for liberation for years. I know hes gonna do big things.

It felt like a moment of true community. Talking to people who listened and cared. Honoring the life and mourning the loss of someone who was failed, and talking about how we can show up better for each other when community needs come up, or important causes. How we can best mobilize in times of need, crisis, or grief.

I saw an interview of Marcellus from 2017 where they asked if he was scared after being pardoned after eating his last meal. He said “I think about a story where a man says ‘Alah, if life is for me, give me life. If death is for me give me death. Im not scared. It’s whatever he has in store for me”.

Last night during our final moment of silence, I sent energy and words to him. I said “I hope this is your peace. I hope the pain is gone. I hope you feel peace. Im so sorry we couldn’t save you.” I have been thinking about it since. I know it doesn’t make it better but I feel some calm knowing that he is at peace. I wish this wasn’t his life.

Imam Khalifa Marcellus Williams. We are so sorry. You will be forever remembered and forever missed.

Thank you to everyone who came, and to everyone who couldn’t make it but let me know you too would light a candle. Thank you to everyone who shared and invited others and used your platform and your voice. And huge thanks to my partner who was able to get me masks, water, signs, a small PA, and a hundred candles on an hour notice.

BLACK LIVES MATTER. REST IN POWER KHALIFAH❤️
