This is why pre-incident planning on the fire line matters.

On August 22, 2024, at 1300 hours, @usartaskforce32 REMS Team was conducting pre-incident planning at the CA-BTU-PARK 🔥, simulating the extraction of an injured firefighter from a dozer line.

At 1505 hours, an IWI was declared. Our REMS Team was able to put that planning into action, extracting an injured firefighter from @lacountyfd Camp 14 using the same rope system we had already established during our drill.

From the time the IWI was declared to the injured firefighter being safely off the dozer line, the extraction took 1 hour and 14 minutes.

Train for the worst. Plan ahead. When the call comes, execute. This is exactly why we invest so much time in pre-incident planning on the fire line.

Unfortunately, tree strikes have claimed the lives of firefighters on the fire line.

This type of IWI is typically a RED priority and is something we must be prepared to manage as a REMS Team.

Lifting felled trees during training provides a valuable opportunity to understand how large trees react, move, and shift-especially in steep and challenging terrain.

On this date, @usartaskforce32 @sangabrielfirefighters REMS Team responded to an IWI red priority medical emergency involving a @calfire Baseline 2 crew member at the CA-BTU-North Complex West Zone. 🔥

Why was this rescue successful? ⬇️

1️⃣ RECON
The REMS team had already identified the steep, challenging terrain crews would be working in. The IWI occurred approximately 250 feet from where the REMS Leader had predicted the challenge. ⛰️🥾

2️⃣ PRE-DEPLOYED SYSTEMS
Rope systems and the rescue basket were positioned before the emergency occurred—saving critical time when every second mattered. 🪢⏱️

3️⃣ MEDICAL CAPABILITY
The REMS team carried a fireline medic pack with the medications and equipment necessary to provide immediate treatment in the field. 💊💉(*Not a requirement in 2020)

4️⃣ IMMEDIATE AIR MEDICAL RESPONSE
The helicopter was initiated for the hoist operation without delay, allowing the team to rapidly transition from patient care to extraction. 🚁🪝

This rescue became a defining moment for the REMS program.

It demonstrated something that had not always been recognized at wildland incidents: rescue alone isn’t enough.

The ability to reach the patient, provide advanced medical treatment, package the patient, and extract them from the fireline is what makes REMS such a critical component of wildland incident response.

The lessons learned from this incident helped shape the future of REMS typing and the medical capabilities being implemented across California and beyond. 🇺🇸

September 14, 2020, wasn’t just a rescue. It was proof of what preparation, training, medical capability, and teamwork can accomplish when a firefighter’s life is on the line.

The Capstan is a mechanical winch that connects directly to a truck’s hitch receiver, providing a portable solution for raising and lowering heavier loads. 🧵

Compared to other mechanical capstan devices, such as the Harken, the Capstan is designed for higher-load applications. 💪

As you can see, it takes only one operator to efficiently raise and lower the load. 🥾

One thing I’ve learned over time is that the mountain bike tire doesn’t perform well on freshly cut dozer lines. It works extremely well on hard, compacted trails, but loose, uneven terrain can create a completely different reaction.

If you’re training with a rescue basket and mountain bike wheel, I highly recommend adding weight to the basket and seeing how the system reacts when it becomes top-heavy, especially on a dozer line or steep terrain during your initial setup.

That’s one of the reasons we carry two types of wheels—mountain bike and ATV—in our REMS cache.

During our last deployment, we started with the mountain bike wheel but ultimately switched to the ATV wheel for the remainder of the deployment.

Having options allows us to adapt our equipment to the terrain and conditions we’re actually working in.

Train with your equipment. Know its limitations. Adapt to the terrain. 🪢🛞⛰️
