Beautiful night in the flower fields at the Festival del Corte de Flor de Gallo. Inspiring for the art and soul.

Impromptu side trip as part of Impression of Oaxaca Embroidery Immersion ❤️❤️

@miriamlcc1 Miriam is a co-leader and embroidery teacher on the trip and this is in her town. It’s no wonder they embroider such beautiful flowers in San Antonino!!

Learning traditional and innovative embroidery techniques from the village of Tierra Colorada in the Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca. Our teachers were sisters Alina and Conception. What incredible work they do. The last photo is the tiny work I completed in 4 hours!

Just back from three days in the Sierra Norte. Day 1 we visited @sedayagaa in San Pedro Cojonos to see the whole process of silk cultivation, from the worms, to the spinning, weaving, and dyeing.

We had a wonderful natural dye workshop and delicious home cooked meal. Thank you to @liz_c_01 and @wendosedoficial for hosting our unforgettable day!

Deep in the mountains, we spent two nights in the cabins of El Carrizal sleeping with the warmth of an open fireplace and the silence of night.

In the heart of the mountains we sketched, stitched, hiked and shared stories. Our meals came directly from this land. The fed us with tortillas from homegrown corn, and homemade bread with their homegrown wheat. Potatoes, beans, squash, wheat, salsa, eggs, chicken, apples, pears… all grown and prepared by our hosts. Food that nourishes the body and the soul.

@miriamlcc1 and I love sharing these experiences with our amazing group of enthusiastic travelers through our tour: Impressions of Oaxaca through @travelingtradersbazaar

We still have 7 more days to go!

Just floored (as usual) by the range and quality of colors pulled from the mushrooms our MyColores group pulled from the forest just this last week. With rainy season fully in action in Chiapas, the sheer volume of incredible Dye mushrooms has been overwhelming… both for our baskets and the back-up of waiting trays for the 24/7 dehydrator! So many thanks to the incredible knowledge of Maestra Alissa Allen (@mycopigments)… her expertise and teaching prowess if unparalleled!

The most magical of these, of course, is the incredible ammonia-ferment brew of Teloschistes sp, a lichen that dyes pink, but changes to blue in the UV sunlight! The pink in the video herein became the blue on the rack!

For Day 2, we are anticipating blues and greens from Hydnellum con crescents and Phellodon niger, purple from the long sought-after Hapalopilus, a mushroom that came to us from Bruch Reed (@bruchreed) who was secretly collection it for Kim (@thisiskimqi) for the last two years!

Just stunning, this magical art form of mushroom dyes!

So many species!! We had a beautiful day in the forest with zero rain. Thanks to our mycologist Ezekiel for sharing his wealth of knowledge and to everyone else for collecting with enthusiasm. Can't wait to do it again in another place tomorrow!

Foraging with the Akha Hill Tribe and making lunch out of bamboo jelly in the rain. One of the many highlights from @the_fungivore MycoThai trip.

Special thanks to Mr. Kong and the community for hosting us. We all had a lot of fun together!

Join us October 11-19 in the beautiful mountain town of San Cristobal de Las Casas, in Chiapas Mexico. Zack @the_fungivore and Kim @travelingtradersbazaar have collaborated with local artisans and guides to share with us the beauty of the region. We will be staying in a stunning hotel and have 3 days of foraging in the montane forests of the Mayan Highlands and two days of dye exploration. While admiring the natural beauty and biodiversity of the habitat, we'll be honing in on a regional rainbow of foraged color. We'll be collecting dye favorites from the genus Cortinarius and Phellodon as we build our palette. These trips are truly once in a lifetime and there are only a couple of spots left. Grab a friend and join us today! Please follow the link in my bio to read the details from @the_fungivore .

Humility. Connection. Community. Generosity. Present—as in not frozen in the past, and presence as being fully present in the moment. Food and shared meals— the important role they play in relationships.

At our final farewell gathering, we asked each participant to describe, in one or two words, what had made the deepest impression on them during the past week. These were their words. We all nodded and smiled in recognition.

The pretext of the journey is the beautiful textiles but those are a doorway to visit another way of understanding and moving through the world.

We closed the evening with the poem that ended Carolyn’s film Woven Lives. It seemed like the perfect ending to both the evening and the journey:

Woven Lives by Carolyn Kallenborn

In Oaxaca, the textiles weave the story of the people and the art,

The art and culture, culture and the land, and the land with history.

Back and forth the shuttle passes marking time.

Like the warp and the weft, life and culture intersect.

Small shifts in color or rhythm, create new patterns and new designs.

Lives are woven, thread by thread, from the past, through the present,
and into the future.

Thank you to all of the participants for the lovely photos, especially to @crystal.renee.drake who had a wonderful way of capturing individuals’ personalities.

Thank you all for your wonderful energy, curiosity, flexibility, laughter and confidence. It was a wonderful week.

If this sparks your interest, or you know anyone who you think would enjoy this experience, pass along the link to the Traveling Traders Bazaar website.

To have a group journey, you need to have a group!

Hokkaido.

Growing up in Oregon, I couldn’t help but see the striking similarities of this northernmost Island in Japan to my home… they share the same latitude range, both are mountainous, and sport so much salmon, venison, mushrooms culture, coastal indigenous peoples, mountains, nature, bears, Pinot noir, blueberries, etc. etc.

As usual with our short Japan jaunts, we did not have enough time to see it all, but does one ever? What we did get to do was just fantastic. This is a smattering of photos from the trip, which included a surprise message from an old Oaxaca friend @flatsitter who messaged that he was there, too, out of the blue and @thisiskimqi and I (@chefmushroomhead) spent several hours this morning running around and exploring Otaru’s vast food and blown glass with him.

Yes, I’m being vague on purpose, it isn’t possible to relate it all. The unfortunate (but actually extremely fortunate, globally speaking) part I will relate is that Hokkaido is one of the few places in the world where a large mammal is reclaiming space from humans, and in this case, it is the deadly brown bears. This made the idea of hiking or mushroom hunting a little terrifying, as everyone was warning us about recent sightings, and as it turns out, 2025 had the largest number of bear attacks and fatalities since record keeping began. We were about a month early for wild mushrooms anyway, though there was planets of rain in our short 3.5 days there.

Amazing. Food was great. Would go again. Message me directly for more specific details.
