# **The Majestic Peacock in Sri Lanka: A Symbol of Beauty and Culture**

## **Introduction**
The peacock, with its resplendent plumage and graceful demeanor, is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic and revered birds. Known as the Indian Peafowl (*Pavo cristatus*), it is deeply embedded in the island’s culture, religion, and natural heritage. Whether seen dancing in the wild or depicted in ancient art, the peacock holds a special place in Sri Lanka’s biodiversity and traditions.

## **Physical Characteristics**
The male peacock, or peafowl, is famous for its iridescent blue-green plumage and extravagant tail feathers, which it fans out in a spectacular display during courtship. The female, called a peahen, has a more subdued brown coloration, providing camouflage while nesting. Peafowls are among the largest flying birds, with males reaching up to 5 feet in body length, with train feathers extending up to 6 feet.
