About 20km off the coast from Tairua and Pauanui are the volcanic Aldermen Islands. They are an important nature reserve and wildlife sanctuary and one of the best open water dive sites in New Zealand.

Everyone more or less takes the same shot of the Wanaka Tree. The variation is provided by the season, time of day and the state of the lake, and your level of patience! A tripod matters if you want to guarantee a smooth lake effect as well.⁠⁠

These shots were taken early morning as the sun was coming up. The minute where the sun lights up the tree and the poplars to the northwest is especially delightful (pics 8 and 9).⁠⁠

Don’t forget to look for the sunrise shot as well which is over your shoulder when shooting the tree.⁠⁠

Still can't believe I agreed to do this walk - the first 2 thirds is a 60 to 90 minute uphill slog along a steep 4WD farm track to the Stack Conservation Area, where it turns to mountain tussocks and a DOC track. But I have to admit the views are superlative, even on a dull day like this one. Pic 3 is more or less the classic shot across the viewpoint on the Mount Roy, Wanaka Track. Pic 1 an 2 are just one part of the astonishing 270 degree view you get. The other third is over my right shoulder back to Wanaka township.⁠
