As kids, we looked up at the sky. Today, we looked down from it.
Nothing about this campaign was artificial. NO A.I
Just people crazy enough to chase an idea until it became reality. If this looks impossible… Good!
That’s exactly how dreams are supposed to look before they happen.

The Ghanaian collective got an Air Jordan collab, and showed the world why they deserve it.

The silhouette is the @jumpman23 Air Jordan 16, and it’s the campaign that’s got everyone talking. Every backdrop was hand-drawn, hand-painted, or sculpted from clay, while every stunt was performed live in the studio by members of @freetheyouth_ghana.

FTY was founded in Tema - a harbour city east of Accra - in 2016 by four friends who share a passion for fashion, art, and the internet. What launched as an online platform to spotlight African artwork soon became a collective building opportunities for young Ghanaian creatives.

Shot by @ilyachemetoff, the campaign’s imagery takes days to produce and uses no stunt doubles, computer software, or AI. That refusal to outsource its visual world is the same philosophy that formed the collective - in a city with no fashion infrastructure, you’re forced to create with whatever’s available. “With CGI or AI, we would have lost the soul of the project,” Timo of @treefillingwindow, the creatives behind the campaign, tells OS. “Free The Youth’s worldview, shaped by their roots in Tema, is all about resourcefulness and building things yourself. You simply can’t manufacture that tactile energy on a computer.”

The references all draw from the same cultural pool. Whether it’s Tema’s colourful architecture, traditional Ghanaian textiles, or the Sun Man stilt festival performers, each shot is a celebration of Ghana’s vibrant heritage, and is something that can’t be replicated artificially.

Following a friends-and-family AJ1 late last year, this AJ16 is their first-ever public release. The message on the box reads: “We succeeded in giving the people hope,” a fitting descriptor, given that a portion of the proceeds will go to youth-led projects and grants for designers in Accra.

In the age of digitisation, FTY took the time to return to handcrafted image-making, honouring tradition and creating something automation never could.
