Today on International Day for Climate Action, clean air feels like a future luxury for some in India.

As pollution once again becomes impossible to ignore across Indian cities, young people are thinking not only about how bad the air is today, but how long it might take before breathing clean air becomes normal.

Our latest Vibe Check looks at how hopeful young Indians feel about the future of air quality, whether individual sustainable choices can make a difference, and what healthier cities would actually require.

Swipe through the findings and tell us: do you think your city is doing enough to make clean air possible?

What shapes young people’s choices when it comes to vocational careers? And what might help them see these as a promising career path?

Youth Ki Awaaz, in collaboration with Pratham Education Foundation, conducted polls, a self-reported survey with 1,602 respondents, to understand how young people perceive skilling, vocational training and the future of work. Nearly three in four respondents were under 30, with the largest age group being 18–24-year-olds.

Through its Youth and Skilling program, Pratham equips young people aged 18–35 from disadvantaged backgrounds with employable skills and connects them with opportunities in jobs, entrepreneurship and further education bridging the gap between aspirations and abilities.

➡️ Swipe through to explore what young people shared about vocational careers and the opportunities and barriers they see.

In a survey of 1,613 Indians by Youth Ki Awaaz and Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, 86% said they were surprised by how easily ordinary lapses could attract criminal penalties. When asked how the law should respond to a minor first-time violation, 97% preferred corrective action, such as a chance to fix the mistake or a formal warning, over criminal prosecution.

The larger question is one of proportionality: when is criminal law necessary, and when could civil or administrative penalties work better?

When something feels emotionally heavy, how many young people talk about it, and how many choose to keep themselves busy instead?

The second wave of Dil, Dosti, Data looks at how young Indians navigate emotional overwhelm, seek support and experience the challenges of opening up. Drawing on responses from 3,072 young people, the survey found that 38% turn to staying busy rather than talking about what hurts, while only 20% first reach out to someone they trust. Stories from the Youth Ki Awaaz community offer a closer look at what it means to carry things alone, and how difficult it can be to share what we feel.

In collaboration with Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and Manotsava, Dil, Dosti, Data 2 brings together 23 findings on love, loneliness, friendship and family, exploring how digitally connected young Indians are navigating relationships and emotional support today.

We go to parks for a walk, some shade, a little breathing room. But how often do we notice the people whose work keeps them green?

In this week’s In Their Words, Yash Budhwar writes about the workers who maintain our parks and leisure spaces, and asks a question we rarely stop to consider: do the people who care for these spaces also get a say in shaping them?

Next time you’re at your local park, look around. Who keeps it running?

We ask women to lead or assume that they already are in most spaces. But in either context, are we making enough room for them to actually do it?

Our latest Vibe Check looks at how often young people see women leading in their communities, the everyday issues they speak up about, and what respondents say still keeps women out of these public discussion spaces.

Are women getting the chance to lead where you live? And when they do, are people actually listening?

We’re told it’s “just a movie”. But the stories we watch can stay with us long after the credits roll.

Our latest Vibe Check asks young people whether films, shows and music shape their politics, and revisits stories from YKA authors about the films that changed how they saw the world.

What’s one film, show, song or artist that changed the way you saw a sociopolitical issue? Tell us in the comments. 🎬

A five-storey PG building collapsed in Satya Niketan, killing seven people, including five Delhi University students.

For DU students, especially around South Campus, Satya Niketan is more than a neighbourhood. Its PGs and rental rooms are where thousands of young people build a temporary home while studying away from their own.

In the aftermath of the collapse, we asked 1,174 young people about safety in PGs, hostels and rented accommodation. What emerged was a much wider picture: concerns about poorly maintained buildings, missing fire exits and unsafe infrastructure, but also the everyday calculations of travelling home after dark and the frustration of having no responsive authority to turn to.

What has your experience of living in a PG or hostel been like? Tell us in the comments.

Diwali is almost here, and so is the annual debate around firecrackers and air pollution. 🪔

Our Yoot polls show that young Indians aren’t necessarily choosing between celebration and climate concerns. Many want limits on firecracker use, while also questioning whether Diwali receives disproportionate attention in conversations around pollution.

What’s your take this festive season? Tell us in the comments.
