the last couple of months, we have been working on a short film: 𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣 𝙃𝙞𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙨, a compilation of images, memories, and scenes that have been living in my mind. What I love most about this film is its experimental aspect: a space where emotion, visuals, and intuition come together. The premiere will take place at Flora Theatre in The Hague on Saturday, July 4th, from 3–5 PM. We’ve curated a special program and I would love for you to join us for this first screening. Saturday, May 2, 2026 Women Artists in Conversation Our YOMU rental space, run by Zergei Samson, is a space to make your own, within an inspiring cultural environment. This completely sold out evening curated by Ella Ezeike, designed to feel less like a panel and more like a room full of honest, open dialogue. Women Artists in Conversation brings together six women working across photography, direction, design, and curation to speak on their practices, their process, and what it really means to hold creative authority in spaces not always built for them. Featuring Ella Ezeike, Michelle Janssen, Bernice Mulenga, Treshna Ballantine, Goldiie, and Sonia Ihuma, moderated by Shaquille Joy. Expect candid conversation, good energy. A little reflection from a founder’s POV:
 I’m ending Q1 feeling grateful and more connected to my why again. The first two months of this year were slower than I expected. I took distance, reflected a lot, tried to clear my head while still holding on to the vision behind UMA SOCIETY. 

Sometimes you don’t realise how much you need that pause until you actually take it. Still, I kept working on a few things. And honestly, being a founder can feel confusing sometimes. Imposter syndrome shows up. Doubt shows up. Some days I’m completely sure about what I’m building, other days I’m thinking maybe I should do something else entirely.
 A friend asked me a simple question recently: why did you start? And she told me to order ‘Start with why’ and I did right on the spot. That conversation brought me back to something I already knew, but needed to hear again. Building something for yourself is not linear.

Some days you feel clear. Some days you don’t. Some days you’re fully locked in. Some days you want to stop. Some days you feel unstoppable.
 I’m learning that both can exist at the same time. The “sometimes” never disappears. You just keep choosing your why anyway. Sharing small bits of this month. Photography Shalina Halma (@shalinahalma)

Storytime! For the past 11 months, we have been shaping what ILANGA is becoming - the brand, the story and the world around it. What started as natural dyeing workshops evolved into a clothing brand idea using only natural materials and dyes, then into research to start a natural dyeing service for brands — until we faced the reality of production costs, global supply chains and the realization that most brands outsource their production, dyeing and finishing abroad. ‘Pivot’ was THE word for 2025!! That’s when ILANGA began evolving into what it’s becoming now: a next-generation pigment company for the textile industry, creating color from plant-based waste, such as onion-skins & coffee grounds: offering a circular, scalable, and safer alternative for people and planet. This first chapter included: ✨ Finalist — @tedxamsterdam Impact Program ✨ Invited by the City of Amsterdam to @globalfashionagenda (Copenhagen) ✨ Named @thenextweb Changemaker of Amsterdam ✨ Our first grant to build a circular value chain ✨ Collaborations with @oudekerkamsterdam & @museumnacht.amsterdam as part of @studiokimsooja exhibition ✨ Curated interview series with the wonderful changemakers @nanasacko @therevival.earth @billynou_ @madeline_butel @walkingprotest_ @caramariepiazza ✨ Showcases & idea testing with @innofest ✨ Our first team member: Aayushi Mehta 🥹 All in 11 months. Our wish for OSCAM OSCAM recently turned eight, marking eight years of growth, collaboration, and impact. Part of the OSCAM team shared what they hope and wish for the future of OSCAM. Recap 8 Years of OSCAM: A legacy of culture with UMA SOCIETY⁠ ⁠ On November 22, we celebrated eight years of OSCAM: eight years of storytelling, community building, and giving artists and creatives a home to grow.⁠ ⁠ Our anniversary always feels especially meaningful as it falls on the same day Suriname celebrates 50 years of independence. Two milestones deeply rooted in culture.⁠ Every year, our anniversary came with a pop-up exhibition reflecting the heartbeat of our community. This year’s pop-up, KAN KAN UMA, presented by UMA SOCIETY, was an ode to Afro-Surinamese and Indigenous women. A celebration of the women who carry traditions, shape narratives, and pave the way with strength. It was a night we look back on with nothing but pride and deep gratitude.⁠ ⁠ Thank you to Stichting Prisiri Fu Wi Afo, Wehpokamanong, Zoë Janice, OurHERitage and every artist, partner, guest or supporter who helped make this evening unforgettable.
