Refuge presents: Tangerine

18th September 8pm to 1am
Ticket link in bio

@tangerine.tangerinee has been an integral part of the underground ‘Australian’ electronic music scene for the best part of the last decade. From running infamous parties like ‘Le Doof’ in Canberra, to being a key player in the now-legendary Absorbed series at Miscellania, releasing her acclaimed first EP ‘First Breath’ and countless revered live and DJ sets - she has done it all. With intention and a deep respect for context, Tangerine’s music rides a long spectrum from heightened emotion to straight-up dancefloor hooliganism like very few others can. She is able to stun punters with some of the most unapologetic dance floor belters that leave even the biggest chin-strokers gasping for air, and then in the blink of an eye, leave them quietly undone by her incredibly emotive, original piano compositions and breathtaking ambient soundscapes alike - all in away that doesn’t feel the slightest bit contrived.

Tangerine is a conduit for the translation of the unspoken. Her fluid curation of IDM, ambience and psy-trance selections model her proclivity towards the unconventional. This inclination towards tension and transience serve as a basal node for her unique augmentation of experimental electro, deep techno and DnB in its totality. The unity of this contradictory dichotomy cultivates a synergy that can only exist in such polarity, in her defiance of the formulaic is an ode to wholeness.
Beyond her live set’s, Tangerine’s 2022 Debut EP ‘First Breath’, permeates an emotional pulse through its accommodation to the aural potential of ambient soundscapes. Shaping her modular approach is her bygone background in composing piano, manifesting the technical prowess of a classically trained hand in among the synths.
Certainly, a skeptic loves to dance as Tangerine teases. Engineering a cold chorus of ebbs and flows that simmer to the hypnotic, laying bare is a monotonous simulation that spellbinds any odd punter. Intoxicating drones tighten the room’s collective, pretension intensifying the coiled breaths dancefloor desires. Tangerine seamlessly mixes subdued layering to contrast sounds and textures, eliciting a subtle relief in each melodic counterpoint or completion.
Tangerine is equipped with a curiosity for how music intersects with the community at large. From advocating for DIY in the sparse nightlife of Ngambri and Ngunnawal Country, Tangerine carved out an artistic ecosystem through ‘Le Doof’, to her coordination in Naarm’s beloved ‘ABSORB(ED)’ series at Miscellania, her affinity for the underground has been integral to its prosperity. Her cultivation of community extends behind the decks too, with notable contributions to mix series’ Animalia, Slowburn and Steeplejack. Fresh off an appearance on a Triple J Butter Sessions Takeover, Tangerine's reach is catching up with her reputation.
