112th Read of 2025
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

A truly special edition of Siddal’s poetry created by @kylecassidy and @trillianstars, the thought and craftsmanship that has gone into this anthology of Elizabeth Elenor Siddal’s poetry is exceptional, and shows the passion of these two individuals to share and celebrate Siddal’s poetic output.

Back in 2017 when I was researching Siddal’s artistic and poetic output for the exhibition ‘Beyond Ophelia’ at Wightwick Manor, I used @janmarsh25 informative 1991 exhibition guide from the Ruskin Gallery, Sheffield to find and read Siddal’s poetry, as well as visiting the @ashmoleanmuseum to see some of her poetry manuscripts, and looked at William Michael’s very late 19th/ early 20th century publications of her poems. But I would have adored to have a copy like this to work from, a beautiful, modern edition of her poetry.

This book is a work of art, bringing together all Siddal’s known poems and fragments of poetry. It also features an insightful introduction from Cassidy talking about the process of creating this book, the context in which the poems were first published, and also a humorous extract from one of the few letters Siddal wrote that has survived - centering her voice.

While we don’t know how Siddal would have wanted these poems published - we don’t have fair copies of the final compositions, or diary entries or letters that instruct us on her preferences for publication, I believe she would have loved this edition.

I like the sensitivity taken by Kyle to remove the invented titles William Michael later gave the works. Furthermore, while we know Siddal’s brother-in-law edited them for publication, without her input, the inclusion of an image from one of Siddal’s handwritten manuscripts and Cassidy’s discussion of this, honours Siddal’s output.

As I’ve shared in recent posts, I was in London to attend a magical, musical interpretation of these poems- inspired by this publication - and so felt compelled to take this book and read her poetry at Siddal’s grave in Highgate cemetery.

Swipe through for images of the event, in Highgate’s chapel and for images from inside this incredible edition.

Poetry read aloud and music composed to accompany it - my favourite way to soak up into my soul the profound beauty of a poets prose.

I was so overwhelmed with emotions attending a performance at @highgate_cemetery of Elizabeth Siddal’s poetry set to music.

As you can see in my last post, I’ve loved Siddal’s art and poetry for many years and curated an exhibition at Wightwick Manor of her artistic output; so to hear her poetry in a new light, to find new depths and meanings was magical.

In this clip you can hear an extract from ‘Oh Silent Wood’ one of my favourite of Siddal’s poems and it relates to her gouache ‘The Haunted Wood’, in the collection of @wightwickmanornt. I love looking at how Siddal’s artistic and poetic outputs are entwined.

Composer Evi Vine (@evivine) created such a beautiful work of art, working with an ensemble of renowned musicians - Steven Hill, Alex Cortes, Theo Croix, Amandine Fradjedas and Maria Christofi.

I had to buy a physical copy of the album - now available on her website - to listen to these gorgeous compositions again and again. A great Christmas present!

Vine spoke passionately about the impact of the recent gorgeous edition of Siddal’s edited poetry- ‘The (Almost) Complete Poems’ by @trillianstars and @kylecassidy, that inspired this album of music. If you don’t have a copy of the book, I’d highly recommend it.

Such a wonderful evening to sit in the chapel, in the cemetery, where Elizabeth Siddal is buried and think of how she would feel having her poetry admired and celebrated, and how it is still inspiring 21st century artists to create.
