In 2013, Bartholomew Granger was convicted of capital murder for a 2012 shooting outside the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont, Texas. Prosecutors said Granger opened fire while he was involved in another trial at the same courthouse, killing 79-year-old Minnie Ray Sebolt and wounding three others. After the jury returned its guilty verdict following less than two hours of deliberation, Granger reportedly showed little visible reaction as deputies escorted him from the courtroom.

To meet U.S. safety requirements, Ferrero introduced Kinder Joy instead. Rather than hiding the toy inside the chocolate, the product separates them into two distinct compartments—one containing the edible treat and the other holding the toy.
