What a day!!!!!
FINALLY did the Escape the Cape Olympic Triathlon in NJ, which has you start by jumping off of the front of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry boat!
The race day energy was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. All walking onto a boat together - music blasting, people dancing and full of nerves, to then hear the fog horns go off as spectators are waving at us from the shore line as we depart for our destination- a mile out from shore was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a race morning.
But then you have to jump.
There is a psychologist on board, @greenepsych Dr Greene told me yesterday do NOT go to the back of the crowd- you will be surrounded by others who are equally nervous and you will all feed off of each others anxiety- so I forced @walshee10 Erin to go downstairs and start lining up with me prior to our drop anchor so we could be towards the front- not first- but not in the back. We found our other teammate @psychdva Shelly and the three of us danced and waited for us to be anchored - and that’s when “Van Hellen’s JUMP” started blasting. I started singing as loud as I could- and then I looked forward and people had started jumping. It was go time!
When it was my turn- Shelly went first. I was to go next- Erin behind me- pushing me along if need be. I was called forward- and I saw three lovely ladies high-fiving me and smiling saying “go! it’s your turn” and I told them “I can’t do this” and they said “Yes you can!”... I hesitated (for what I thought was a second or so, but Erin told me later on that “I took a long time to go”) - then went to jump. Stopped, turned around- but quickly turned back around and just went for it!
I don’t remember the fall to the water at all... I remember being on the boat- then I remember being about 3-4 feet under water and knowing I had to swim back up to surface... I got to the top turned my head around to see Erin at the top of the boat and then started swimming.
That was the jump. I survived. Everything else accomplished that day was a bonus. (will post more on the race later)- but I finished the Escape the Cape Olympic Tri- and I jumped off a Ferry today. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday!
