The first time I took a taxi home from uptown to Tribeca, the driver thought I had given him the wrong address. When my parents came to visit, their taxi driver thought the same. It was extremely desolate in the mid-90s.

We were a group of about a dozen of us in our 20s, living in crazy huge loft spaces,—artists, musicians, jewelry makers, working in fashion, advertising or, in my case I was a pastry chef (at Duane Park Patisserie, which is still here). Tribeca was mostly warehouses and some killer restaurants like El Teddy’s, the Odeon, Tribeca Grill, and a bit further north Lucky Strike and Balthazar. Bubby’s was a tiny hole in the wall then, and we would sometimes put up a volleyball net outside of it on Sunday afternoons in the middle of the street because there were no cars or people around. There was a big spice warehouse one block south on Leonard Street and the smells of cumin and cinnamon would waft through the neighborhood when they got deliveries. We rollerbladed. Danced at Wetlands. Coffee & cigarettes. No pictures, unless you wanted to lug a camera around!

Our loft was at 150 Franklin Street and if you pass by now, you can still see the big frosted glass door that was our entrance. JFK Jr and Carolyn lived directly behind our building on N. Moore Street. We would see them around and paid tribute with flowers and candles after the shocking tragedy.

I still live in Tribeca a few blocks from that loft, and I can see my old loft from my living room window. I love my neighborhood and raised my children here. I guess some day they’ll reminisce about this neighborhood!
