For Manchester Metropolitan University student Martha Turner, fashion is a medium to navigate the lived reality of disability. Her brand, CLAWDD, presents garments that tactilely explore the physical and emotional labor of living with ME. Drawing inspiration from gaudy 1980s bedrooms, Turner utilizes fabrics reminiscent of old mattress patterns to reflect on how a place of rest can transform into a prison. Every design detail carries conceptual weight: the heavy burden of a coat bearing down on the model, impractical eyelets that strip the garment of its protective function, and elongated sleeves that obscure the hands, acting as a direct metaphor for how her illness impacts her daily life. Through this deeply personal collection, Turner channels her love for the craft to challenge conventional fashion narratives from the inside out.
