To commemorate International #DayoftheGirl Child, we celebrate the 60 million refugee women worldwide, a remarkably resilient population navigating dangerous new environments and social/legal structures that are failing them. At RefuSHE, we refuse to let their stories end in vulnerability. We are actively rewriting the narrative by providing:

Holistic protection: Safe housing and trauma-informed care tailored specifically to the needs of unaccompanied and separated young women.

Empowerment through education: Specialized schooling, digital literacy, and vocational training to build independent, self-sustaining futures.

Legal and medical advocacy: Defending their rights, prioritizing their health, and training community members as Anti-GBV Champions to shift the culture from the ground up.

Join us in demanding better protection, fiercer advocacy, and brighter futures for refugee girls everywhere.

Meet Achol, a South Sudanese-Kenyan refugee 🇸🇸 🇰🇪 and RefuSHE Fashion & Design student. Achol has dreamed of working in the fashion industry for as long as she can remember.

“I had always wanted to study fashion, but there was no one who could pay for my tuition, so I wasn’t able to enroll in college,” she said. “Instead, I decided to do whatever small jobs I could find. I thought maybe I could save enough to pay for one term, then go back to work, save again, and continue my studies little by little until I achieved my dream.”

This January, Achol enrolled in RefuSHE’s Fashion & Design course, as part of a 30-student cohort. The program runs through December and culminates in an internship.

“Coming to RefuSHE has taught me so much. I’ve learned how to use a sewing machine, draft patterns, sew garments, and work confidently with sewing tools. Now I can make shirts, dresses, skirts, handbags, and many other items.”

Thank you so much for everything, TPS! ❤️ This experience was truly unforgettable, and I’ll forever cherish the memories I made, the lessons I learned, and the incredible people I met along the way.

From day one, we were mentored by industry professionals who genuinely care about and believe in the next generation of filmmakers. Being here allowed me to grow as a creative in ways that a classroom setting simply can’t always foster, and its deepened my passion for filmmaking.

Thank you to my mentors for all of your love, encouragement, and guidance. I’ll never forget the lessons you shared with me or the impact you’ve made on my journey. 💫 @isreal311 @deance_wyatt @maggie_bush @tk.saidit

And a special thank you to @lbreezy4, @britt_britworld, and @khaleesiamina for creating such a meaningful experience for all of us. I appreciate y’all more than you know!

TPS, you’ll always have a special place in my heart. ❤️ @tylerperrystudios

gratitude. that is all i feel when i look back on my summer spent @tylerperrystudios 🤍🎬. it would be impossible to describe the many reasons why this internship was so special, but what i can say is that this has been one of the best experiences of my life. i am forever changed because of the people i met and the journey we went on making our short film(s).

to my sandbox family, i love y’all dearly. each of you have taught me so much-not just about filmmaking but also what it means to be a better human.

to my mentors, thank you for pushing me to show up as the best version of myself. i couldn’t of gotten through this without each of your guidance & for that, i am eternally grateful.

What do you love about #nairobi? Share in the comments!

Is it the vibrant mix of cultures? The fiercely original fashion and arts scene? The lions and giraffes living in the backdrop of a city skyline?

For RefuSHE participants, Nairobi represents safety, opportunity, and sisterhood. We are the only organization in Nairobi dedicated to serving refugee girls and women. We are proud to call Nairobi our home.
