⭐️ Omens Associated with the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights (aurora borealis) have long been linked to various natural or mystical omens. These interpretations range from positive signs—such as longevity, happiness, or the birth of a successful son—to warnings of misfortune, including war or poor harvests. They are also frequently associated with the supernatural realm and mystical phenomena. Different peoples and cultures have perceived various symbols in the aurora, ranging from celestial dances and the games of spirits to bridges between worlds. Let’s explore a few of these.

Positive Omens:
👉 Far Eastern traditions: Encountering the Northern Lights is considered a good omen, foretelling a long and happy future.
👉 Japanese belief: It is believed that children conceived under the aurora will go on to be successful and prosperous.
👉 Chinese belief: Seeing the Northern Lights is a sign that the coming year—or perhaps one’s entire life—will be filled with happiness.

Negative Omens:
👉 British folklore: In the south, where the aurora is rarely seen, it has sometimes been viewed as a harbinger of war, famine, or other calamities.
👉 Inuit (Eskimo) beliefs: In their legends, the aurora

Interpretations of the northern lights as omens are deeply rooted in local myths and cultural traditions; they can be seen as either a positive sign or a harbinger of misfortune.

Teriberka, in the Murmansk Region, is the edge of the earth—the point where the Arctic Ocean begins and the Barents Sea breathes. Here, the road comes to an end, giving way to a different kind of realm—one where conventional standards of measurement lose all meaning. The rocky shore descends into the water, the tundra stretches right up to the precipice, and the wind never ceases, all year round. We have been bringing guests here for twenty years, and in that time, we have learned to notice details that a first-time visitor might easily overlook.

A good place to start is the shore we call the «Dragon’s Egg Beach.» This isn’t some marketing ploy for tourists; it’s a name that simply took root on its own. Boulders lie here in orderly rows—round, smoothed by water and time, in shades of gray and brown, and of varying sizes. At dawn, when the light hits at a low, oblique angle, they truly resemble a clutch of eggs left behind by some colossal, long-vanished creature. We ask our guests not to rearrange the stones or take any with them. The shoreline has already changed over the last twenty years, and we want to preserve it, at the very least, in the state we found it.

Further along the coast lies the skeleton of a «Leviathan»—the remains of a large marine animal that washed ashore many years ago. The waves and wind have left their mark: the bones are bleached white, the ribs jut upward, and the whole structure looks like a gateway one could walk through. People leave the remains undisturbed, choosing instead to walk around them. It is a place where one realizes, with striking clarity, just how much more powerful—and indifferent—the local nature is compared to humanity. We pause here, allowing our guests a moment—at least a minute—to stand in silence, free from the rush and the need to take photographs.

Our itinerary also includes a simple, human element: lunch. We bring guests to the restaurant so that, after a meal, they feel a sense of warmth—both in their stomachs and in their souls ♥️ #teriberka #аврора #aurora

Probability forecast for a faint Northern Lights display: 82% ❗️Murmansk Region.

My forecast from yesterday proved entirely accurate: there was an incredibly powerful display! 🥇
Today, there is an 82% chance of catching a glimpse of the Aurora. ♥️ This is the Northern Lights forecast for the area around Aurora Village (Murmansk) and the broader Kola Peninsula for the night of October 26, 2018. I recommend heading out to “hunt” for the Aurora starting at 9:00 PM. A faint display is expected from 9:30 PM throughout the night. The Kp-index is low, at 1–2.

📅 Report date: October 26, 2018.

🕓 Time of posting: 3:40 PM 🔍 Source: Visitmurmansk.

1️⃣ I provide daily or tri-daily updates on the Northern Lights. I have spent over 20 years “chasing” the Aurora. Please note that this forecast represents my personal opinion rather than a definitive statement, and it may differ from the assessments of other experts. We have been an official tour operator in the Murmansk Region for 22 years, with a fleet of 15 buses and a staff of over 40. We also operate our own “igloo” hotel—a glamping site with transparent domes called Aurora Village.

2️⃣ There is an 82% probability of seeing a faint Aurora tonight; however, there will be 60% cloud cover across the entire Murmansk Region.

3️⃣ Lunar illumination tonight will be at 50%. 4️⃣ Bottom line — not everyone will be lucky today

New ❗️ — photos of the sky from webcams around the Kola Peninsula as of 16:15

🌝 PS — the charts from the app, on which my forecast is partly based:
