#TheMC #TheMClyrics As #Jamaicans our culture is at any point blended, permeated or bombarded with Western influence, while offshore we can be found anywhere in the world, #culturalchameleons blending in, permeating and influencing foreign culture. Jamaican schools teach the need for the queens English and road teaches you the need for patois. When I arrived in Jamaica thinking how Jamaican I was, I sounded very British, and For my survival learnt quick to keep that accent at home. My first schooling experience however had me surrounded with quite a few Americans or #JamaicanAmericans or #Jamericans ? My second schooling experience... not so much. So what a Jamaican sounds like has always been very relative. Everywhere on and off the island we sound different. So... What’s a #Jamaicanrapper supposed to sound like? For me that means there must be comfortable use of the vernacular even if it’s not overt and the content should be genuine to the cultural experience. Of the best historical examples I got a short list, I know it’s way longer. These however are Mostly #Emcees with connections to Jamaica that’s not such common knowledge as opposed to #Jamaicanrappers. So people like #HeavyD #SlickRick #BustaRhymes #NotoriousBIG #Biggie #Canibus #Shinehead #BornJamericans #Peppa of #SaltandPeppa #KRS1 #KRSOne #JnrGong #DamianMarley #Akala ...but pre how much of Jamaica is in their style and pre how different they sound to one another. I think Gong is the best current example but I don’t know if he’d wear that title. Beenie man has had his moments, as well as Sizzla and you can hear the #HipHop in the veins of lyricists like #VybzKartel #AgentSasco #SpraggaBenz ... Of the generation of artists a forward culturally or geographically representing Jamaica expressing themselves through Hip Hop tho I am hearing a much more Jamaican sound. For some tho #itsbiggerthanhiphop Am just saying ... Tag a Jamaican rapper nuh What you say?
