Spent time on a beautiful retreat at Bertha, a space filled with peace, clarity, and quiet reflection. 🌱💕

Deeply grateful and honoured to have been part of such a meaningful experience. 🤍

Yesterday was filled with creativity, conversation, and imagination at Mapping Youth: Memory, Protest, and Futures in a Democratic Landscape.

A big thank you to the UJ students and facilitators @tripproject_za for an inspiring collaboration. Through body mapping, we drew, coloured, reflected, and envisioned new possibilities together. 🎨✨

The Aqua Blast Pitch Bend Through Axle Cranker is born.

These sometimes start as drawings on paper.

Then 3D 'drawings' using the easiest to work with materials.

Then after a number of experiments I sometimes translate to materials like wood and PVC.

Bottles are just more fun.

You can see it on my face.

Today I just felt like playing with colours and pretty pictures. Leaning in to the feeling, I realised how seldom I do anything for the fun of it. Working in academia, there is a lot of pressure to produce ‘outputs’- products that accrue subsidy are prioritised. I have become so accustomed to this, that making pretty pictures with fun colours for no reason feels radical. My goal when writing and teaching is to bring joy to academic work. I am adding this goal to art making from today 💥💜⭐️ above: Cape parrot (gouache, acrylic marker and wax crayon on watercolour paper). #joyofart #purposefulplay #birdsofinstagram #artmakinglife #gouaché

👆🏼from my morning journaling today- lessons from painting, for writing. Reflecting on my approach, expectations and feeling joyful about doing the work of artmaking vs writing, I realised, I experience joy when making art- even if the work SUCKS. I think this has to do with having fewer expectations about what the art work must be at the end, and not forcing a timeline on to the artwork. When making art, I expect a lot of mess until something works- and look forward to the messy middle. When writing I fret, freak out, berate myself for each cliche, limp claim and beige sentence. No wonder it’s hard, no wonder I even consider doing housework instead of writing in low moments. #lessonsfrompainting #artmakinglife #creativeprocess #creativewriting

Watercolour portraits of Nare Mphela and Kirvan Fortuin from the Communion series. They deserved so much better.

This Youth Day, we honor the bravery of the past by standing up for the girls of today.
Access to pads is not a luxury. It's a right. It's part of the fight for equal education.
Because no girl should ever have to choose between her period and her potential.
