![Are you thinking of trying reformer Pilates? I’m brand new to it & I’ve been loving @trivarapilates !
Here are some practical tips I’d give to fellow beginners before attending your first class:
1. Bring grip socks!! It’s usually a requirement for better traction, safety, and hygiene. You can buy them at the studio or purchase your own beforehand!
2. Arrive 15–20 minutes early. Give yourself time to settle in, get familiar with the studio, pick a spot in the centre so you can view better, and speak to your instructor before class starts to let them know it’s your first class. Mention any injuries, health concerns, or physical limitations before you begin.
3. Wear form-fitting, comfortable clothing. Avoid anything loose that could get caught in the reformer or make it difficult for your instructor to see your alignment.
4. High ponytails and buns are cute, but will be very uncomfortable when you’re lying on your back. Go with a low ponytail/bun or a braid!
5. Slow movements are key. My instinct was to rush through the exercise to complete it, but reformer pilates is all about control, precision, and mindful movement. Going slowly is so important (and also more challenging and beneficial than rushing through it). It allows for the target muscle group to do the work and also gives you better breath control.
(Here’s one more: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The equipment can look intimidating and confusing at first. Asking how something works is much safer than guessing! Also, go at your own pace and don’t worry about keeping up with everyone else! Everyone’s focused on themselves and no one is judging you 🤍)
