I turn 40 today! ✨

Reflecting on the last decade, my 30s were a rollercoaster ride—full of change, self-reflection, discovery, tears, laughter, and pure joy.

I’ve achieved many of my dreams and explored different versions of myself. I went all in on figuring out who I am, and I’m proud of the person I’ve become. I lived life to the fullest, faced my fears, and trusted the process.

Now that I’m in my 40s, I’m looking forward to what’s ahead—this time with more confidence, grace, and love. I know that no matter what happens, I will be okay.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey. I’m eternally grateful for the ways you’ve added color to my life.

I have been promising some updated flashback videos from the @ljifff 2021 and 2022 fashion awards in La Jolla, California, and here is the last of three that I’ll be posting from the red carpet. I will be posting a couple photographic montage videos on Mother’s Day this Sunday (and with more to follow). At least one of the videos on Sunday will be all about powerful and beautiful women who encourage, inspire, support, and develop younger generations to dream big and go after their dreams like they have.

In an exciting era of Barbie and Poor Things (two powerful films promoting the necessary journey of the modern-day woman), the statistics of women in film and tv are still shockingly low. According to USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative (a think tank led by researcher Stacy L. Smith), in 2022, only 9% of the top films were directed by women, an increase of only 1% from 2008 (14 years prior). In 2019, the advocacy group @womeninfilmla estimated that even if the number of female directors increased by 25% every 5 years, we’d have to wait until 2072 to reach parity. And so, it is imperative to support women’s voices and give rise to films that share our unique perspectives and lenses. I have learned there is nothing more significant than the power of trusting yourself. When we surrender to the lessons given to us in life, we can participate in the universe’s magic. As I become more in sync with myself, I align more frequently with nature and the world around me. Even before I set foot on this earth, the narrative infused in my blood, the tattoo stamped on my body, and the movie created for the character I would ultimately become had attached itself to me. From a wide lens, my story is about race, religion, slavery, and death (Jewish heritage), in addition to the genocide and violence that has tormented women (my gender) throughout history. When I zoom in, I reflect on the coping mechanisms I adapted to mask pain and general suffering in the world. My story is the story of many. Life can be hard and full of challenges, sometimes throwing out more than what we are prepared for or understand. It might be cliche, but our walk on Earth is a true journey. One that is much easier and joyful when we are held by sisters and a community to lift us up. Join us as we raise funds today not only for the film Vespertine, but an opportunity to share a collective, safe space where we can be vulnerable and open, where no one has to feel shame and alone behind closed doors.
