Black Sun Rises ✅ (Camera ran out of storage for the last 2 moves 🥲)
This one came to my surprise yesterday. After dropping the move after the crux, I was able to stick it again and get the top. Special thanks to @vladthe1mpaler, @hi5buddy, @aidan.shipperley, and @grace.hales2 (to name a few) for the unending support of my growth as a climber and a person. Sending a double digit boulder in one session has been a goal of mine for a couple years now, but it’s been difficult for me to even tick more than one in a given year. I always chalked it up to not being strong enough or good enough at climbing, but there were so many more factors involved. My freshman year of college was a breeze, but then COVID hit and I tried to use the opportunity to pick up more hours at work and take more classes.
In Fall of 2020, I took 17 credits, worked around 25-30 hours a week, and studied an additional 40-60 hours a week. Last semester, I took 18 credits and worked 30-40 hours a week. This past summer, I worked full-time in a lab at UMD while continuing to work 15 hours a week at Earth Treks. Even this semester is still busy for me, so I haven’t been training or climbing nearly as much as I’ve wanted until recently. This is not the move haha. I always measured my self-worth by how productive I could be, by my grades in school, and by the difficulty of the climbs I could do. Even as I spoke to the athletes I coach about basing your self-worth on the effort you give and how you can be a positive influence to those around you, I struggled with this myself.
Fortunately, I’ve always had an amazing support system to get me through the rough times; however, it’s always been difficult to not define my value by numbers. I’ll keep growing as a climber and a person and work on keeping what matters in mind. Even if I never reach my climbing goals, I’ll work on enjoying the process and having fun with the people I get to share those experiences with :) those memories with last beyond a lifetime. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
