What a busy first few weeks!!! And I wouldn’t bloody change a thing. Without sounding too saccharine, it is a joy to speak to so many Aussie icons about the things they love 💕

Apols if you don’t hear from me this weekend. I will be sleeping

Tropfest is coming home to the Domain, and I couldn’t be happier.

Some of my favourite Sydney memories are Sunday picnics in the Domain with friends, then watching short films under the stars once it got dark.

What most people don’t know is that I have a tiny place in Tropfest’s history.

In 2010 I’d just joined YouTube, with a brief to bring more film and TV onto the platform. Tropfest was one of my first calls. Over lunch, John Polson told me one of his biggest headaches: film submissions arrived on VHS tape, and those tapes had to be shipped to judges all over the world.

I was giddy with excitement. YouTube could solve this. What if filmmakers uploaded their films to YouTube, set to private, and the judges watched from wherever they were?! It felt revolutionary at the time. Now it sounds almost quaint. But that’s how Tropfest went digital for the 2011 festival.

On Friday at the launch, seeing John and hearing from George Miller, last year’s winner Lianne Mackessy (Crescendo), Premier Chris Minns and so many of the festival’s long-time supporters, it felt very full circle. YouTube is now Tropfest’s official streaming partner, entrants submit through YouTube, and the festival is back where it belongs.

Save the date: Saturday 13 February 2027, Valentine’s weekend, free, in the Domain. It’s the first Saturday night in Tropfest’s 34-year history, with 16 world premieres under the stars.

Filmmakers, submissions open 1 December. This year’s Signature Item is “Necklace”. Seven minutes or less. Go and make something.

Got a kid with a story to tell? Trop Jr entries close 23 October.

We caught up with @tropfest Foundation Chair Sarah Murdoch and discovered she has one very specific filmmaking pet peeve: footsteps that don't match the shoes.

Turns out, great sound really does make all the difference.
