This morning our staff rolled up our sleeves and helped with the demolition of AYA’s future home.

We tore down walls, swept up drywall, and ripped out insulation.

It was exciting to play a small part in preparing a space that will become such an incredible resource for our community. When completed in 2027, AYA’s new building will provide safe spaces, programs, and support for youth experiencing homelessness.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute, even in a small way, to a project that will make a lasting impact in our city.

Today is Epiphany.

This morning, Troy invited our staff to begin the year by receiving Jesus and paying attention to how Christ is revealed among us, again and again.

Epiphany comes from the Greek word for “revelation.” It is the day we remember Jesus being revealed to the Magi, and through them, to the world.

That is where King Cake comes in.

Epiphany also marks the beginning of the Mardi Gras season.

The cake points us to Christ the King, hidden and found, reminding us that Jesus is revealed to those who seek him and that joy and preparation often go hand in hand.

CELEBRATED

The best word I can use to describe the 9 days since my 40th birthday. Starting with the surprise birthday/album release party last Wednesday and ending with a surprise trip with some of my closest friends in the land of the happiest place on Earth, I have felt nothing but love, appreciation and celebration. I feel like the richest man alive. My people traveled for me…some by car for 10 minutes. Some by car for 4 hours. Some by plane for several days! @ashlee_eiland made it her personal mission to make 40 a birthday worth remembering.

Last night was the final gathering of Mars Hill Grand Rapids.

@dlwn_music and I moved here to help launch this community into existence — and what a gift that endeavor turned out to be.

I remember one of my professors, Dr. Soong-Chan Rah, teaching us one day about church lifecycles. He said, “Just because your church may fail doesn’t mean God’s Church fails.” I recall feeling a sense of peace and relief after that — and honestly, that peace remains. I truly believe MHGR lived the life it was meant to live.

As we gathered in a circle for communion yesterday, my heart could hardly handle serving the many faces that have meant so much to me over the past 3 years and 7 months. I had the honor of serving my spiritual family one last time alongside both my husband, and @troy_a_hatfield. The last hands I served were tiny ones covered in marker. They belonged to a child that I’d seen grow up in those pews. Life.

The final words were those of my spiritual brother’s. He’d spent a considerable amount of time in prison and had come to our community after having had a hard time feeling welcomed by other churches. He gave a flower to each of the pastors who’d journeyed with him. And as I look at that flower, I’m reminded of two things: 1) This flower will soon die, but 2) Its imminent death doesn’t detract from its beauty. It’s a reflection of a kind, loving and intentional creator. Life.

It’s not super popular to post about the things that have to do with us that have failed or ended or that didn’t turn out the way we expected them to. But maybe it’s good news for you today that failure and ends don’t mean “faithless” and “empty.” God shook a place in Acts 4:31, not to leave the believers in a heap of rubble. Instead, they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

The place fell and the people were filled.

MHGR (that’s you who’ve been once or there since day 1) — I love you. Thank you for the immense privilege of being part of your life. To God be all the glory, forever and ever. Amen. ✨

What an incredible couple of days.

We watched the @leapoffaithmovie for the first time in theaters and saw the vulnerability, beauty and pain all over again. We also saw the Spirit captured on screen, somehow. We watched our big kids sing on the same stage as @yoyoma. And I watched as the other 11 pastors and I stood together and, once again, shared presence in a world that’s so divided and divisive. What an honor.

Thank you to my friends and family for showing up for me and for this film. To the @colossianforum for your enduring love and hard work. @yoyoma for your generous and generous and GENEROUS care for us in sharing your gifts of music and humanity. @picturehouseusa for saying “Yes!”

And to you.

Maybe you haven’t seen it yet. But on a day like today and in a world like ours, we need works of art like this. Like what @nicholas.h.ma has so beautifully stitched together through the lens. But people need to see it in order for other people to see it. Demand is the fuel on which our world runs.

When life gets overwhelming, even routine tasks like making a meal can feel daunting.

This is why we are introducing the Freezer Meal Project, which was created to ensure that we always have a home-cooked meal ready for anyone in our community who could use one.

In a similar spirit to the White Bucket Project, the Freezer Meal Project operates on the principle that if you need a meal, take a meal, and if you have a meal, give a meal.

This morning, our staff worked in groups to prepare a stockpile of freezer meals for you and our community, and we had a blast.

Today, it’s all about treats, no tricks! 🦖🎃🦕

We dressed up in our spookiest attire and shared the tale of “Danny and the Dinosaur: Happy Halloween” with the kids at Grandville Education Center, our next-door neighbor.

The dinosaurs were a big hit, and so was our “apple-bobbing” activity.

At least the kids got to enjoy one healthy fruit today, right?
