The infamous Reggae Nucleus magazine anniversary show at Bluebeat Lounge in January of 2003! Featuring an all star band including most of the Scientific era Hepcat rhythm section performing together for the first time in a long time! So exciting! Shortly afterwards the entire Hepcat band would reform for a massive show in Hollywood at the House of Blues and the rest is history. Also in the band, a very young Roger Rivas, Chuck from See Spot, Chris Murray, as well as John Pantle on trombone.
Also on the bill, the legendary roots reggae niyabinghi group Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus. A very memorable night indeed! Anyone have any recollections about this one?

Another great blast from the past came up today from 10 years ago when @thelionsreggae released “Soul Riot” on @stonesthrow and @pntbtrwlf and @teardrop_estates helped us put together this incredibly dope video for our re-do on @the_clash ‘s “Magnificent Dance” in the alley behind the ST offices on Figueroa. Big up @wilderstyle1 @alexdesertwashere @shakespeareblk @malik_the_freq_official @truedestony @sunkingstudios @eddiefelixmusic @manlikedevin @ralicke @daveychegwidden and a special thanks to @nancearte !

Go check out the video for “The Magnificent Dance”on YouTube or at the Stones Throw website if you haven’t seen it. If your one of the 126,000 folks who have viewed it already THANK YOU!!!

Whew! We’ve finally had a chance to catch our breath after Warped Tour Long Beach, and we just wanted to say thank you.

To everyone who came by our set, sang along, danced, skanked, said hello, or even discovered Hepcat for the very first time... you reminded us why we’ve been doing this for all these years.

It was especially incredible seeing so many younger faces in the crowd. Watching people discover ska—or discover our little nook of it—for the first time was something really special.

And to all of you who’ve been with us since the Moon years, the BYO years, the Hellcat years, or even our first show in Rami’s backyard (you know who you are)... thank you for continuing to carry this music with you.

We don’t take any of it for granted.

Much love to the entire Warped Tour family, the organizers, the crew, and every band we shared the day with. The show, the crowd, the experience… was EPIC.

Hope to see you all again very soon.

❤️

Two bands that have truly helped shape today’s ska, rocksteady, and soulful reggae landscape—and are no strangers to the Vans Warped Tour stage—Hepcat and The Aggrolites.

Enjoy a few moments captured by @mo_buhh from their stellar performances this past Sunday at Warped in Long Beach, CA.

Super, super stoked to design this hand-painted @officialhepcat guitar for @punkrockandpaintbrushes charity auction at this weekend’s @vanswarpedtourlb …make sure you drop by their booth and check it out (plus all the other cool stuff they’ll have). More details TBA (believe me, I have all kindsa stuff to say about it, the process was so much fun) 😸

As a big “origin story” geek, I chose the theme “Everyone Starts Somewhere,” and showed Alex’s old Venice pad which was right off the canal—this was where we started in late ‘89. You can see Alex’s kitty, “Hep,” from whom we got the inspiration to name our band Hepcat.

The whole band signed the guitar last night at rehearsal, and we’re stoked to contribute to the cause. Proceeds will go towards Jamaica’s Alpha Boys School music program, to give back to the institution that helped forge the foundational ska genre, without which we would’ve never pursued this lifelong endeavor. By bidding on this guitar, you are directly funding instruments, music education, and resources for the next generation of music pioneers at the Alpha School of Music. Stay tuned for auction and bidding details via @punkrockandpaintbrushes …let’s keep the music playing where it all began. 👊🏾 🙏🏾❤️
